jfeldmar: Gyulafehervar
I am researching my great grandmother. I found in the ellis island records that she came over from Hungary on April 14, 1910 (her married name was Elza Marton). Her place of birth appears to be Gylafehervar based on those records. However, I don't know her maiden name.
The place appears to be Alba iulia based on the Radix web site. Is this in Hungary or Romania?
I assume I could go to the Mormon temple site to try and figure out more detailed information. Are there any other suggestions?
Thanks,
- Jason

Posted some websites to your MARTON query.

This village, Gyulafehervar is in Also-Feher megye and at present in Romania. The LDS-Mormons are listing only military records.
You might have to hire a researcher in Romania to research for you.

thank you so much for your help! I appreciate it!

Do you happen to know if the mormons are doing any further research in the area or are they done with only the military records?

Thanks again,
- Jason

Elza MARTON's father's name was Roth Majer. It is listed on her manifest.
Elza was naturalized citizen in 1942. You can request her naturalization petition.
www.nara.gov
The town of Alba Iulia is listing a ROTH. Possible a distant relative?

Your welcome, Jason

I do believe it depends on each government. The Czech Republic's government did not allow their records to be filmed but the Slovak Republic (both former Czechoslovakia)did. Ukraine was also one of them that did not allow the films to be filmed.

I did see her father's name but couldn't read it clearly on the document and was told that her name may have been Roht and not Roth.
How did you find when she was naturalized. I haven't come across that information and would be interested in researching other relatives that also immigrated from Hungary - namely from Gyoc/Gyor/Gyer (i.e., Jacob Feldmar) and getting their naturlization records.

Thanks again,
- Jason

The information that I wrote is on her Ellis Island manifest.

The town of Gyor is in Gyor megye and in Hungary.
The town of Gyer is in Torontal megye and in Romania.

11 FELDMARs did pass thru EI and some were from Gyoc which is Gyor. Compare the way the R is written in the word father.

Hungary's phone site is at :
www.matav.hu/english/index.html
The town of Gyor's phone book is listing FELDMAN(NE) Mrs.

I know most of the information is on the Ellis island manifest but where did you find out she was naturalized in 1942?
I can't find anything on the nara.gov web site (unless I am looking in the wrong place). Also, is there an easy link to order the naturalization petition?
I am sorry if I am driving you crazy with my questions, but I am very grateful that I have found someone that is knowledgeable in this area and has obviously done quite a bit more research than me! :)

Thanks again,
- Jason

I guess I thought you saw what I saw.
Recall a set of numbers by Elza's name? Those are the numbers that you need to start looking for her naturalization petition. If you know what state and town she lived when she applied for the naturalization then you would go to that town courthouse or federal courthouse. See the numbers 5-29-42, that is the date.
The NARA site needs some exploring. Anyone in the family has her naturalization certificate? That would be the easiest way to find out which courthouse has the petition.
This website has a lot of information on naturalization and such :
http://www.italianancestry.com/Section5.html or
www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/Manifests for explanation of the markings on the manifest.

thanks again!
I found similar markings on other documents EI records and now know what most of them mean.
I was wondering if you could help me with one more quick question.
I have another great grandmother named Boriska Feldmar that went through Ellis Island with my great uncle when he was a baby (in 1914). I am trying to read the annotations next to their name and can't figure out what it says in the deformed or crippled column and continuing to the right. Do you have any clue what it says?
Thanks once more,
- Jason

Your welcome !

What I see on Boriska's manifest does not make much sense.
I can make out the notations below hers : sister Eliz. Mtclair, NJ, (xis?)maybe going to Mr. B. Fridrich ?Leo House to ?late; one below this : xeis(going sounds much better)to uncle who is owner of a Gy???? Can you say that the notation by Boriska might be : going to father? or going to farther?
