Jeff George: Census data/living relatives in Debrete, HU
My Great-grandfather was born in Debrete in the late 1800s and I am trying to find out whether I still have any living relatives there. I wonder if anybody out there has any town or church contacts that may help me.

Did you try locating any distant relatives by using
Hungary's phone site?
www.matav.hu/tudakozo
http://tudakozo.matav.hu

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) have filmed the church records but nothing coming up for Debrete. You might have to search around the area to see which village would have Debrete's records.
www.bmi.net/jjaso to familiarize yourself with church wording.
The town of Debrete falls into Borsod megye/county.
The 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :

Are you talking about locating living relatives in Hungary?
The Hungarian phone site does have an English version.
It is pretty easy, you just have to experiment with the name and towns being that you might not have Hungarian alphabet keyboard.

Joe Barna: Re: Census data/living relatives in Debrete, HU
I was visiting in Debrete in October of 2003, It is a very small village at the end of a very small road. Probably 15 or 20 houses, not more than 7 or 8 lived in now, including the shuttered church. I was looking for relatives with the surname of Barna because my gradnfather left Hungary from Debrete in 1893 or so. No luck though. I also visited a neighboring village where my paternal grandmother came from and did find a distant relative there. I will likely be going back to the v illage in the next year or so. What surname were you searching for? Feel free to email me at: joebarna -k-u-k-a-c- cdeinc -p-o-n-t- com

I was in Debrete a couple of years ago - not much there at this time, probably a dozen or so elderly residents and a closed church as well as a number of abandoned houses. What is the name of the relative you are looking for?

Joe,
The Debréte "closed church" is a Parish, the R.C. mother church is in Tornaszentjakab aka Szentjakab, the Gr.Cath. is in Viszló, the Reformed Calvinist is in Rakac(z)aszend, so the records are under those place names.

Sorry Joe, but I have not seen any of your forum posts until today for some reason. The name I am looking for is an unknown exact spelling for the surname Kovach. It could be Kovach, or Kovacz or any number of spellings in Hungarian. They americanized the name to Cowatch when he landed on Ellis Island. He has told us that he is from the village of Debrete and my great grandmother was from what was then Czechoslovakia, just over the border, I think she is from Zelina and her surname was Mintuch, but again unsure of the exact spelling.

DAN C : Re: Census data/living relatives in Debrete, HU
Mariann

The internet has made it a small world. I am Jeff's cousin and discovered the radixforum.com by accident. I can fill in some details about his great grandfather (my grandfather)

He was born Istvan Kovacs or I guess to be proper, Kovacs Istvan in February 1886. His mother was Borbala Tobis Kovacs and his father Gyorgy Kovacs. They lived in the village of Debrete and apparently were Greek Catholics as my grandfather recalled his church had a "crooked cross" and I have always assumed he referred to the foot piece. His father died sometime in the early 1890s and my grandfather emigrated to America at age 8 with his younger brother Jozsef leaving behind a partially crippled brother Ferenc whose condition barred him from emigrating. His recollection of Debrete was that the family grew grapes. This could mean anything from a vineyard to a back yard arbor.

Any graveyard or church information would prove useful as well as any folks still living there who might have Kovacs or Tobis relations. Family history indicates there was contact with relatives in Hungary until World War II after which they seemed to have disappeared but I have no further information regarding them. As my grandfather came to America so young our family does not enjoy quite as rich an Hungarian tradition as many other Hungarian-Americans but I do recall him singing many Hungarian songs and one in particular about the national hero "Kossuth."

I would love to see any of your photographs of Debrete

Best Regards

D Cowatch

Ilona Kiss: Re: Census data/living relatives in Debrete, HU
My Grandmother Anna Spisak was born in Debrete. She had a brother Jozsef and perhaps a sister, Mary. Her Mother's maiden name was Dobos. My Grandfather, Mihaly Szakal was born in Szogliget, his last address was Debrete. His Mother's maiden name was Torok. Yet on his papers as well as Jozsef's they attached the name Tobis. I do not know why. I believe my Grandfather had 5 brothers and a sister. Are there any relatives out there?

Thank You,
Ilona Kiss
