jf: VARGA FROM DOL. DOBRAVA
My great-grandfather was Pal Varga. Born June 16, 1891. His naturalization papers state he is from Dol. Dobrava. Many people I have asked think this is Donja Dubrava. His mother was Regina Stefic and his father was Frank Varga. His mother died when he was nine and the family lived with an aunt. He served in the military, WWI. He had a brother, although I cannot read the name on the manifest. He had a cousin, Steve Stefic, who stayed with them in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Not much is known about his family.

The brothers name is Gyuro, I believe it's George in Slovenian.
The place is Alsódomború, Zala, Hungary until 1920; later Dornja Dubrava, Yugoslavia, today Croatia.

You can get Church and Civil Records from FamilySearch.org - Family History Library Catalog:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

At Place Search, search also-domboru for Church Records and alsodomboru for Civil Records.

Take a look in this site for information on research in Croatia. www.croatia-in-english.com
The phone book of Donja Dubrava is listing VARGA and STEFIC. You can find the phone site in Robert Jerin's website which is in the above mentioned site.

jfigueroa: Family in Detkovac
Looking to make contact with our family in Detkovac, Croatia. Antolovic, Bazijanac, Gradinjan, Rajnovic are the names. Grandmother and Grandfather in US are still living. Celia Antolovic and Mary Bazijanac were cousins. They are my Great-Grandmothers. I would like to learn more about the villiage also.

jfigueroa: Krizovljan
Great-grandfather was Ivan Posavec from Krizovljan. Brother may be Victor. Ivan's father died, mother remarried. I think Victor had a twin brother who died young. There are two Posavec's living in Krizovljan, but I do not speak Croatian.

A friend has an oil painting done by a Simon Grandinjan and was looking up info on him. Was given to her mother (Croatian) and lived in Milwaukee Wi. West Allis area. Wondering if there is a connection.

Yes. There is a connection. Simon was married to my great-grandmother, Mary Bazjanic, from Detkovac. They had a daughter, Rose, born 1911. They migrated to the US except for Rose, she stayed behind and was raised by the family there. Simon and Mary divorced and he remarried. He took early photographs of my great-grandparents and grandparents in Milwaukee.
