It sounds as though we of the same generation. Andrew was my grandfather (b. 1889 d. 1978)and youger brother to John.
Of what I know, Andrew was born in Adelaide, PA (southeast of Pittsburgh, PA) and was one of the four children (John, Ed, Andrew & Susan Katherine) of John (Johann) and Katherine Hughmanick. Andrew was in the first graduating class of The Pennsylvania State Police and remained on the force until he retired in the 60’s.
Andrew often told stories that he had heard his father tell of those D_ _ _ “polish” coming down across the border stealing horses. My dad remembers him talking to his brother Ed in Slavish at times and drinking ‘Tokay wine’
The original 144 acre homestead that John & Katherine bought in 1910ish, is still in the family and in my Dad’s name. It is located in Indiana County, PA and is a combination of woodland and farmland. The original farmhouse burned in the early 70’s.
As I had heard it told, Andrew and his brother Ed had quite the falling out I believe in the late 40’s when while reading the newspaper saw the farm was up for Tax Sale. Ed had not paid the taxes for years. Andrew went down to the Tax Sale, bought the farm back for $43.00 or so. Later in the mid 70’s Ed and his wife Peale filed suit for ownership of the farm. Andrew eventually won. (in 1976-77). Andrew died in 1978 of congestive heart failure and other complications from that.
I was just contacted by someone in Washington who has a copy of Katherine's Birth certificate. My dad Ronald has a copy of teh declaration that John Sr. made to renounce his alliegance to Franz Joseph that he had to sign inorder to purchase the farm.
I would like to know any history that you may have.
