| kezdi: Re: Gula genealogy | Hi Eveline,
At Ellis Island One Step website you can search for and even order copies of the Original Ship Manifest for your ancestors: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ellis.html
For example, just fill out the names Vazul and Gula and nothing else, click on "search (new format)", you'll find 2 Gula, Vazul.
On the first name, Arrived 1900, Age 36 (this's a mistake, should be 19 as you'll see later) click on the Scanned Manifest, than look for the magnifier symbol, which will enlarge the Original Scanned Ship Manifest. This document, in my opinion, one of the most precious you can have of your ancestors. Gula, Vazul age 19 (here you can see the Age 36 transcriber error is from the line above), single, Last Residence: Vidrány.
I don't know if this Vazul Gula is your ancestor or not, but Vidrány is very close to Krajná Bystrá(Slovak)/Krajno-Bisztra(Rusyn)/Bátorhegy(Hungarian).
Unfortunately the other Vazul Gula's (age 42 in 1894) Text Manifest doesn't corresponding with the Original Ship Manifest, with other words can't be found with one step, have to search for it.
You can order and search Vital Records at your nearest LDS(Mormons) FHLC (Family History Library Center), their website: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
At Place Search just fill out Vidrány, and follow the links until you see the View Film Notes box at the upper right corner. Write down or print the Film Number page, that's all you'll need to give to LDS/FHLC, who will order the film, and will notify you in few weeks when it's ready for you, only cost $3.75 per roll.
I already did it for you, so you can check if you reached the same results:

Repeat all the steps for Janos Gula from KrajnaBisztra, three are listed, the #18 and 19 are the same person, I didn't check the #17. The following is the LDS/FHLC Film nuber for Krajna Bystra:

You'll need this Church Record Translation website: http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/
This's a multi language general translation site: http://www.foreignword.com/Tools/dictsrch.htm
Vazul indeed is a very old Hungarian name, as a matter of fact after St.Stephen all the Hungarian kings were descendants of Vazul, Prince of Hungary. Himself and all his sons married Kiev (Rusyn) Princesses, so it's not surprising that Vazul was a well respected name in Hungary Rusyn community.
I'm very proud that my surname is associated with Vazul, if only as a title for his father Mihaly, Kupan of Somogy, meaning Head of:

I hope this helps in research of your ancestors, and let me know if you have any question.
