christmasbaby49: Kykta, Kichta, Kichty
I have finally found the remeining family member of my grandfather, Martin Andrew Kichta. His siblings (George, Joseph, John, and Irene using the surname Kichty) came to America under the name of Kykta (originally Kyktadragos or Kyktadragas) from what is listed as Kravjar or Kravjan on the Ellis Island Records and on some census records. We can't find Kravjar/Kravjan on any maps. Does anyone have any ideas? We are looking for other family members as well.

I am also researching my husband's Kikta Dragos family from Kravany. In the church records (birth, marriage, death) I have seen them go by several variations. Sometimes just Kikta or Dragos and sometimes they use both names as a last name. I have been using microfilm at my local LDS center and it is surprisingly easy to read. While it is in Latin & Hungarian, it is in a table style format and fairly good penmanship.

If you have some names & dates I can look to see what records might be available on microfilm. The latest birth records start at 1899 & go back to 1676!

My husband's family came to the Youngstown, Ohio area in the early 1910's. Where are yours?

I am the great granddaughter of Martin Andrew Kichta, who came to America around 1895 from, if I have the right Ellis Island records, Kravany. Martin and Mary had five children, Paul, Coleman, John, Irene, and Phillip and lived in Pittsburgh, PA and Sanford, VA. My grandfather is John Joseph and he and his wife Alleatha Doris White had five children: Arlis, Florence, Mary, John and Harry Herman, my father. I have recently found some of the siblings of Martin who lived in Pittsburgh also and were only minutes away from my family and we never knew them since they went by the name of Kichty. Both families have stories that the family name was originally "Kichtadragos" or "Kyktadragos."

Zlatica : Re: Kykta, Kichta, Kichty
It is possible that the name Dragos was used as an alias if there were several families in the village by the surname Kichta. Only Kravany's church records would provide that answer.

Christmasbaby49,
I think we may have a connection! My husband's great-great grandmother was Maria Kikta Dragos from Kravany. I have just started my research, but one of her brothers (George) came to America in 1900 and stated that he was going to stay with his brother, Martin Kikta who lived at 6374 Penn. Ave in Pittsburgh, PA. I'm fairly sure this would be the same Martin Kikta as your great grandfather. Does this address ring a bell with you?

Please feel free to contact me privately if you want to explore this connection further. I would be very interested in hearing about the other siblings of Martin you found.

Look forward to hearing from you,
LaSondra

Robert Dragos: Re: Kykta, Kichta, Kichty
Kravany aka Kravjan is not in Hungary but rather in Slovakia a few miles south of Poprad in Spis County in the the northeast sector of Slovakia. My grandfather's father was a Kikta born in Kravjan (Hungarian spelling) for the village now spelled Kravany. Some time after his birth the name Dragos was added to his surname for reason I am still seeking.

Dragos: Re: Kykta, Kichta, Kichty
Regard to use of Kikta Dragos combination. My guess for whatever it is worth; because villages were usuall quite small in numbers Kravany historically appears to number about 600 I just assumed that in order to avoid inter marriage problems the church advocated the remedy.
For instance; in my fammily going back about six generations a Kikta had several children by his first wife who died fairly young. Kikta then remarried and raised a family larger than the first and it is those descendents that now use the name Dragos.

Chips53: Re: Kykta, Kichta, Kichty
I just tripped across this forum and I hope it is still active!! My grandfather was George Kikta, brother of Martin and Maria (or Mary) from Kravany in the Slovak Republic. I have traced my grandfather here in the states and went thru the LDS microfilms to trace his family.

George and Mary settled in Youngstown, OH, and many of their respective descendants are still in NE Ohio. I am descended from George's second marriage to the widow Mary (Pavuk) Koperdak. I found as much info as I could on his first marriage as well.

I have no info on his brother Martin or that side of the family and would dearly LOVE to know more! I know that Martin settled in the Pittsburgh area and used the name Kichty?

I will gladly share all the info and photos I have. I was born too late to know him but I have cousins who did and have been trying to write down as many stories as I could pull from their memories.

Please, if any of you are related to me, my email is chips76309 -k-u-k-a-c- yahoo -p-o-n-t- com

Thank you!

I too just stumbled on this forum. My great-grandfather was Stephen Kikta, youngest brother of Andrew, Maria, George, Martin and Joannes Kikta. My understanding was that Stephen was born in Hranovnica. I am trying to find descendents of this line still in Slovakia. -DCK

Chips53: Re: Kikta in Ellis Island
Thank you for the help and the links!
About your ancestor Stephen: the family story I was given said that the youngest sibling was blind and as the others left Slovakia they each signed over their share of any property to this blind brother. Does any of that sound familiar?

I found my grandfather George's records in the LDS microfilms for Kravany church records, where the name "Dragos" just appears and then disappears. The family lore on "Dragos" is that the name Kikta was so ubiquitous that Dragos was tacked on to distinguish that particular family. Anyone else hear that?
