My Great Grandfather was Christoph Limberger he immigrated to Canada before the first world war. Leaving one daughter Maria (my grandmother) in Mikalok. She married Frank Yany and had 4 children (my mother) Anna, George Bertha and Katrina. Could this be part of the family you are looking for?

My grandmother Caroline Menzel) had sisters married to Hrycaj and Hink. Have you connected the Hricaj surname to the villages a few miles east of Stryj Ukraine and/or Bohemia?

Hi there.

I am so glad to have found this.
My grandmother on my mother's side was born Limberger.

I have found the name Palmerich and the photograph of him and his wife in my mother's things. She had also told me about these relatives in the US. I am now myself married and living in the States.

I would be very interested in further contact.

Best regards,

Hello,
I was born in Michalok and I am the youngest child of Franz an Anna Hricay (a sister of Willi Hinke who is also mentioned in this forum). You are looking for Josef Menzel and his wife Rosalie Engelmann. I knew Josef Menzel who lived in Karlsruhe / Germany. As far as I know, his wife Rosalie died sometime during the WW2 and he married Maria
the widow of Kosyra Vincent (she also was from Michalok. Josef Menzel died long ago (min. 20 years ago). Not long ago I spoke to Klara (Josefs' stepdaugther) on the phone. She still lives in Karlsruhe.
You can find more detailed information about Michalok:
http://www.geocities.com/ycrtmr/books.htm
I myself have the book "Deutsche in der Ostslowakei" - ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON CARPATHIAN GERMAN HISTORY AND CULTURE. You may be able to obtain it in English language.
In the book is a group photograph of 1934 showing Josef Menzel and Rosalie Engelmann also. Caroline Menzel is not mentioned in the book. Had she left Michalok before 1944??
Hope, I could help a little bit.

Hallo Werner,

Hi Michel,
I should let Jason Nedecky respond to you, but...
I really doubt Jason has your father in his tree. ...still, anything is possible.
You need to know the village where your father was born. If you don't know his birth village, follow his migration trail backwards starting with his Austrailian migration and naturalization records.
What language(s) did he speak. Religion. Your mothers name. They likely spoke the same language.
Hricaj a common name along the Poland Ukraine border. Many Hrycay around Dolina.
Your one sentence posts are not enough info. Perhaps a brief account where he was during WW2. Why did you refer to him as Jacques.

Zlatica is a message board helper...gives great advice...lives in USA and I think has Slovakia roots.

Jason...there now is some online digitized Slovakia records. Some for CZ Rep., but nada for northwest area.
cheers...Barry

Zlatica... surname question... WENEINKO born about 1875 unknown where... lore is he was Prussian military officer unknown rank ...migrated to Canada in 1921 from Michalok CZ. Different surname in Canada. There must be marks over some letters in surname Weneinko. I got the spelling from his grandson who has the passport. Your thoughts please on alternative spelling. Weneinko is the old country spelling.

No Michalok in Czech Republic but Slovak Republic.
No W in Slovak or Czech alphabet.
KO ending would suggest Byzantine Catholic. Was your ancestor BC?

Sorry Zlatica
The person that has the passport never sent me a scan... I asked for a scan 3 years ago. Our grandmothers were sisters. WENEINKO is not my line. Our grandmothers were Roman Catholic. I suppose he could have been BC from where ever he was born. Only clue is the Prussian army ...east or west Prussia, I don't know.
I don't really research this surname. The name interests me because if spelled corect, it seems unique. ...also I could never find them on a ship arrival.

My family never lived in Michalok. 5 of my grandmother's siblings and their spouses lived there.

The NW Czech thing is where my ancestors lived before migrating to Galicia. On this Michalok thread, besides Menzel, Engelmann and Trautmann are surnames in my bloodline.
