What time frame did your ancestor come to America? If they do now show up in Ellis Island website www.ellisislandrecords.org than they came thru Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia or even Canada.

The village of Tokajik's Mayor is Jana MEDVEC(OVA).
www.obce.info It is a small village with only 112 inhabitants. Everybody knows everybody and most likely related.
The LDS-Mormons site is not listing church records of Tokajik which means that they must be included with another village. You can inquire in Family History Center Library.

Jean: Re: MEDVEC, STEFANIK
Thank you
The 1920 census of Luzerne Pa. list Nicholas coming in 1887
and Marie or Mary coming in 1898.
On Ellis Island web site there are a lot of Medvecs and the
soundex of them, so I just have to figure out a connection.
Eventually I will try to get in touch with Mayor Jane Medvec, if I can find an English site.

Zlatica : Re: MEDVEC, STEFANIK
Your welcome.

I would not hold my breath for English version. This is a very small village. Your best bet would be to send a letter, even in English with family information and a photo of your ancestor.
Nicholas will not show up in Ellis Island since he came before its opening. Do you know for sure that Maria came thru Ellis Island? If yes, search with One Step/Gray form www.stevemorse.org Your ancestor could have come thru Baltimore, Boston or Philadelphia.

Female names in SK end in A so Jana is a female. The ending OVA or SKA is female.
Orosztokaj and Felsotokaj are old names of the present village Tokajik.
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Zemplen megye. It is on the left side by a #10 as Or.Tokaj on this map.

I found two posts on this board. Both are in Hungarian. I do not speak Hungarian. Surname Stefancsik would be Stefancik in Slovak and it is different family and not your Stefanik.

Steve: Anna
I just reviewed several of your posts and my grandmother was Anna Stefanyik (?) who sailed on the Cassel in May of 1914 and came in through PA. What type of name is this?

Thanks

Steve

Do you have a place of birth for your Anna? What language was spoken by your ancestor? A spelling STEFANIK would be Slavic for STEFANYIK, Hungarian.
Take a look in Ellis Island at the other STEFANYIKs that came thru that processing center to America. www.ellisislandrecords.org

Zlatica : Re: church records
Jean

I looked thru the LDS-Mormons site searching for the neighboring villages but nothing. I wonder if they were incorrectly cataloged with another village.
Have you inquired in your nearest Family History Center Library about them? Possible they could be with Giraltovce, Stropkov, Turany or Rafajovce.
Not sure but www.iabsi.com/gen/public should have something about the church records.
I see that there is a ?? by Tokajik in the www.carpatho-rusyn.org/films2.htm site about the film numbers.
