PLEASE HELP. When my grandfather, born in Hungary, filled out his World War I United States draft registration card, he wrote for his town of birth: Unymegye. But I understand "megye" to be translated as "county."
For "state" of birth he wrote what appears to be Arasskomsro. He wrote "nation" as Hungary.
Can you please help identify the town or city and region where he was born in Hungary? He was born 1889.

Thank you. Gourmets

Gourmets,

Here is a website for the old 1910 Hungarian megye / county.
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910

This sounds like a typing error as there is no Unymegye but an Ung megye and a village named Oroszkomoro which is now in Ukraine as Ruski Komarivci like the other poster said.
A good locator of a town / mapquest is :

Thank you very much (koszonem szepen) for your very fast response last year to my request. I was overjoyed that it was the first time I knew a place where my grandfather was born. It makes me nervous to keep pursuing, but it is important to me.

When I searched Ruski Komarivci, I found towns like this northeast of Moscow, but not in Ukraine. It seems very far away.

My grandfather's brother said he was born Okomarocz, Hungary, Ung Rahwayt.

He married a woman born Orvszveg - Hungary ??reg.

Are Oroszkomoro and Okomarocz the same? or close to each other?

I am grateful for your help.

Koszonem.

Also, my grandfather's brother (born circa 1893) spelled the family name as Vaszoka whereas my grandfather spelled the family name as Waszok.

Does Vaszoka sound more Hungarian than Waszok?

I'm confused.

Koszonem.

Ókomoróc nincs, csak Oroszkomoróc.
Oroszvég, Bereg vármegye, Munkács mellett, most már egyesült Munkáccsal. (Mukacsewo)

A map of Austria-Hungary at the time of your ancestor:
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910
Click on Ung megye, locate Ungvar (which now is Uzghorod, Ukraine)proceed South-East till you locate Szerednye and a bit South-West is Oroszkomoro (now Ruski Komarivci / Russkie Komarovci, Ukraine)
Use www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
Type Uzghorod or Seredne, Ukraine except that the village does not show but at least you got the location. My Slovak Republic's atlas does show the village by that name.

Using One Step / Gray form www.stevemorse.org to locate an Ellis Island manifest, there was a Jozsef VASZOK from Oroszkonoro/ Oroszkomoro and going to S.River, N.J.
Use a search engine www.google.com type in Zakarpatska Rus
and you should get over 773 hits on that subject. Of course, I did not check everyone of them if all of them are of use to your research.
I know that in some cases a W was used instead of V onces in the "new country" as the English W makes a Slavic V sound.

gourmets,
In Hungarian, Orosz means Russian, but also the ethnic nationality Rusyn/Ruthén(H). In documents, like the shipping manifest you find at Ellis Island, they liked to shorten place names, especially compounded names like Orosz- for O. Sometimes can create confusion because there is/was many H. place names starting with the compounded word O, meaning old or ancient.
Current name: Руські Комарівці(U) - Oroszkomoróc(H)

Place County (1913) District (1913) Current country
Oroszkomoró Ung Szerednyei Ukraine

In the 1800s and before Oroszkomoró was known as Komoróc(z), Komaróc(z), Komoróci, Komaruvci (Ung County, Ungvár District ), and also as Orosz-Komoróc(z) a Rusyn majority village, to distinguish it from the nearby Komoróc(z)-Palágy, Ung County, Kapos District.

If you ever have the luck, to search church records, which can be done only in Ukraine right now, the village only had Gr.Cath church, R.Cath. and Izr. went to church in Szerednye, H.Ref'd to Korláthelmecz(Putka-Helmecz).

My great-grandparents Peter and Mary Medve came from Sislocz in Ung Megye in the 1890's. I have heard that that part of Hungary is now in the Ukraine. Could you tell me by what Ukranian name it is called?

Hello there,

Your village is called "Shishlivtsi" (as phonetically transcribed into English) in Ukrainian.
