shesgotsauce: Stephen and Theresa Simon of East Chicago, Lake Co., Indiana
I am researching the ancestry of a close friend, Betty Simon Goodrich, who died last year while I was pregnant. I named my daughter after her. She was born in Hammond, Indiana, and was ethnically Hungarian. I have located her in the 1930 census and her parents are listed as Stephen and Theresa Simon. Stephen was 34 and Theresa was 24 and both list their place of birth as Hungarian Czechoslovakia. The year of immigration is 1921. Stephen's occupation is bricklayer. I found a Stefan Simon on the Ellis Island website, arriving on Sept 4, 1921 on the Mount Clay from Hamburg. His age is listed as 25, his occupation is mason. He is listed as single, and the relative who paid his passage is Paul Simon of Beaver Falls, PA. His race is Magyar, and his fahter's name is Johann Simon of Abny. Torna. Debrod. I found a Paul Simon in the 1920 and 1910 censuses for Beaver Falls, PA. His birthplace is also listed as Debrod Hungary. He is a steel mill worker. His year of emmigration is listed as 1893, and I think I found him on the Ellis Island website as well.

I am replying to your message because you have noted a birthplace of Debrod, Hungary for a Simon. I am related to a Simon family, but as yet have not found the relatives. My great aunt was married to a Balint Simon, and settled in Canada, then left for the usa after a brief while, at the turn of the century. I might add that I think the origin of the family you are seeking could be "Debro" because that is the birthplace of my great aunt. Debro is actually Feldebro or Aldebro (means higher or lower Debro), Heves, Hungary (still in Hungary) Perhaps this is a clue. Good luck

shesgotsauce,

I think the Abny Torna is Abauj-Torna megye.
There was a village Debrod, Abauj-Torna megye, Hungary which is now Debrad, Slovak Republic.
A phone listing for S^IMON Gustav in Debrad's phone book.

You might want to check into the church records that LDS-Mormons have filmed.
