Thomas_Gegeny: History of Gegeny
Does anyone know the history or where to find a history of the village of Gegeny? It seems that many of my ancestors have records in Ibrany (a larger town), but I believe that my family's lands were closer to Gegeny (in Szabolcz megye).

Try this website :

The LDS-Mormons website is listing church records for/from Gegeny and Ibrany.

It is Szabolcs, not Szabolcz.

My last name is Gegeny. I was just messing around and typed in Gegeny in the search bar and your message came up. I have tried to research my last name but I could never get anything. My dad was full blooded Hungarian. Supposedly the name was Gegen before they came to the USA. I just thought I would share that with you. I have never seen anybody with that last name. Are you hungarian? Where did you hear about the village of Gegeny?

Donna

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research. Do yo have it? When did I hear about a village named Gegeny? When someone posted a query on this board. There were GEGENs and GEGENYs that came thru Ellis Island to America. Take a look. www.ellisislandrecords.org You need to register but no money.

thomas_gegeny: Re: History of Gegeny
Yes, the name is Hungarian. My grandparents on my father's side (and other family) emigrated to America from Hungary in the early 1900s. There is a village near Ibrany (a larger town) where more Gegenys reside. I know that my family members are from that region for sure. It is a very old family name, from what I understand and the research my father has done. The family crest is a red chevron (like an upside-down v-stripe) on a plain silver background. There has been some indication that the original family may have come from elsewhere in Europe but was awarded land for service in battle. This would have been as early as the year 1200. There are too many holes, however. I wish I could take a year off and go to Hungary to research all of this! Thomas P.
