mercedskoolkat: Cergov
My ancestors were Bakalar, and were originally from the Cergov area. They later took the name C'ergovsky when they left the area for Bardejov and Giraltovce areas along the Tolpa River.

I am interested in hearing from anybody that may have had Bakalar or C'ergovsky ancestors from these areas.

Thank you!

Zlatica : Re: Cergov
Your surname BAKALAR seems so familiar, like I have seen it posted on a board someplace.

Yes, you had assisted me before on another board! I have traced them back to the Bardejov area via oral history from another researcher. C'ergov is where they came from originally, but I don't know the village. There are quite a few.

I have also searched Csergov. I believe C'ergov is an area/mountain range, rather than a village.

Thanks! Any additional possibilites would be appreciated.

Zlatica : Re: Cergov
Your welcome.
C'ergov was an old name for a village C'erhov. It is in Zemplin region of Slovak Republic and very close to Hungary's border.
There was a village named Csergozavod in the Saros megye and now it is called Zavadka. This village would be much closer to Bardejov. This is where the mountain range Csergo / C'ergov aka Cergovska javorina is.
If you use http://mapy.atlas.sk to locate Zavadka (click on the 3rd one)there you will see a C'ergov as a name for a mountain.
On the Lazarus map it is as Csergo.
Just because a name originates from a village by that name that does not mean that the name exists in that village. Only the church records would produce results.

Hi

Have you looked at the Ellis Island manifest of CSERGOVSZKA, CSERGOVZKI,CZERGOWSKA?

Seems that the surname BAKALAR lists in much better numbers in the village of Stulany and Giraltovce.
www.zoznamst.sk

Using One Step www.stevemorse.org there were 19 BAKALYARs, 123 BAKALARs that passed thru EI.

I have seen the village C'erhov on the map in the Zemplin region. I do not believe it is the source of the family. Csergozavod would be much more likely. I have seen the C'ergov mountain range on the map. I will look for Zavadka.

Most used their first name and then Bakalar then C'ergovsky. Sometime after they left the general Bardejov area did they add the alias C'ergovsky, ie, Bakalar from C'ergov (area). It sounds as if Csergozavod/Zavada is the most likely village, however I imagine it could be any of the villages in that general area. I am sure that Bakalar or it's variants would be the name in those areas.

C'ergovsky is much less common in the USA than Bakalar. About 1:5 ratio.

Thank you very much!

matviya: Re: Cergov
I came across your queries about the Cergov mountain and thought I would add my thoughts. But I am no expert on this area. However, Bardejov is located on the northern slope of the Cergov Mountain, so as others have said, your ancestors may have changed their name to indicate the area where they were from. My ancestors were from the southern slope of that same mountain.

mercedskoolkat: Re: Cergov
Thank you. Do you have any idea of how far east the slopes of Cergov mountain extend? The last place my ancestors lived prior to emigration was in the Giraltovce area. Would that be still considered the Cergov area?

Thank you.
