Shirley: Kortvelyes
I understand that my grandfather is/was from this area. However I have learned that Kortvelyes, Hungary no longer exists. His name was Lajos Tamas born approx.1877.....how would I be able to find any records of him from this area? Can someone please help me.
Thank you! Shirley

The village exists just not with the name Kortvelyes but as Hrusov, Slovak Republic.
The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Abauj to locate Kortvelyes. Use http://mapy.atlas.sk to locate Hrusov.
The LDS-Mormons website is listing as having church records of Hrusov. You can order the films and gather ancestral information. www.bmi.net/jjaso to familiarize yourself with church wording.

Sandi: Kortvolcs vs Kortvelyes
I have found in the Harazt church records the confirmation record of the earliest known ancestor of my father. On that record, the town of origin is listed as Kortvolcs, with umlats over both the "o"s.

I can only find Kortvelyes listed as a village name.

Are these possibly the same or should I continue looking?

Thank you~

I would suggest making a copy of the old megye map where the ancestral village is. That way you can compare the name of the villages from the church record. Most of the time the villages would be within 10 miles radius.
I would say that Kortvolcs is a mistake, no such. Well there is a Volcs but it is in Romania. The correct spelling would be Kortvelyes and there were several of them. www.bogardi.com 1913 gazetteer of Hungary
