Radix: Old map of Khust and region
Here is the old 1:200,000 military map showing Huszt and its region, dating back to the early 1900s.

susan szyjka,
What you're probably looking for is Чумалеве/Cumaleve, Hungarian name Csománfalva. You can find it on this early 1900s map of Máramaros County on the top of the bright yellow Técsői District, east from Huszt(Khust) which is in the brownish green area: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/maramar.jpg

Today it's in Ukraine, and shown as Cumaleve on this map. Unfortunately it doesn't come up by the name, so type in Chust or Khust, and on the map all the way on the right side click on Kolodno. On the next frame zoom in one step, you'll find Cumaleva NW from Kolodno:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/main.adp?countrycode=UA

Let me know if you got it.

Looks like it didn't work. Let's try this very good Ukranian map.

Debbie: Khust surnames
I just found that my husband's Grandfather was from Khust, and it was listed at Hust, Austria-Hungary, on his death certificate. Name in USA was Aaron Wolf, his parents were Manuel Wolf who married Rose Moskopp. Aaron came to US in 1910, maybe. Is there any way to find more family information from Khust/Hust/Huszt for the Wolf and Moskopp families, and where they were admitted to the US?

George Rosenthal: Re: Khust surnames
I just received a letter from a distant relative who has been researching her family's roots in Pre-WWII Czechoslovakia. My father was from a nearby village called Chumalovo (Tsmolif). But his closest friend was from Khust. His name was Aaron Hoffman and he passed away about 3 years ago. He is survived by a wife named Rosalyn (Roz) and two sons. Our families were very close and though we were not related, we grew up thinking of them as sort of like cousins. Aaron settled in Chicago. We arrived in 1951 and have lived in and around Chicago since then. I hope you are able to find the information you are seeking. Regards, George

hytsyl: Re: Old map of Khust and region
Well, it is less then 40km. I was born in Khust Ukraine myself, so is all the rest of my family. About traveling to the region, it is kind of depends do you know the language. Very few people would know french, german, or English. If you get to Khust, there is something called marshrytka (sort of larger version of minivan that goes to a particular villlage). If you can get to bus station in Khust there you can board that bus and it will take you all the way to that village. If you would board a private taxy it still would not be very expensive for 30 EU since you are a foreigner, I personally would not pay even more then 25EU. Another way to get to that village is to travel to small city of Tiachiv, it is much closer to Chymalevo. I am sure you would find a bus or private taxy to take you to that village. One note that I want to add. My dad, who was born in village close to Chymalevo just said, Rozman is very common name there. It might be a difficult task to find exactly whom you are related more closely too.

George: Re: chumalovo
That trip sounds very exciting. I hope you have a wonderful time. I have no plans to visit at this time but perhaps someday. I had the opportunity to visit my first cousin who still lives in Budapest, Hungary back in 1986. She is married to a very famous author (George Muldova) who is very well known in Hungary.

I have a distant relative living in Florida who helped me get in touch with my father's roots in Chymalevo. She has done a lot of research and created a website link of her own.

I hope you find the connections you are looking for and I wish you a safe and pleasant journey.

Sincerely,

George

Helen: Re: looking for my granforther
I have relatives named Jacobovicova From Drahovo, which was Czechoslovakia between the wars. Now in the Ukraine. These villages were in the Maramaros county of Aus/Hungary before WW1. Danylovo is close to Drahovo. My Aunt Rachel Slomovic Jakobovits lived in Drahovo, murdered during the Holocaust along with her inlaws. Photo of Jacobovicova grandparents of my cousin Helen Jacobovicova. I have more info if you see a connection

MARCELA: Re: looking for my granforther
helen

thanks for your message,I'm not sure about the connection. actually my grandfather's mother's complete name was: JERAJDA YAKUBOVICOVAbut i'm trying to read it from a very old paper so i'm not totally sure about her last name.
his father's name is clearly written:DAVID LEBA FUCHS.
is danilova same as danilovo? MY grandfather elias fuchs was borned in this town, is it close to khust? because this was where he did military service.
jerajda died because of yellow fever about 1920, there were 11 brothers, elias my grandfother had a twin, last information he had from his family was the biggest part died within the second war, some others could escape to israel and usa but we lost contact!!
hope we have a connection!!!
thank you!
marcela.

Helen: Re: looking for my granforther
The present day spelling is DANYLOVA.Coordinates in Ukraine are 48 09N 23 27E. The village had many names depending on which country it was in. It is 7miles from Khust, 7miles from Drahovo and 6miles from Chumalovo{my families' home} I looked up information for you on jewishgen.[http://www.jewishgen.org/]
If you are not familiar with Jewishgen, it is by far the best search tool for Jewish genealogy. There are researchers listed for Danylova with the name FUCHS. Also check out Yad Vashem for names of Holocaust victims. You may find Fuchs from Danylova. There are different spellings for the shtetle, so dont give up. you are in the right place. By the way, when Danylova was in Hungary prior to WW1, it was called HUSZTOFALVA.
