US_Eszto: Searching for Info re: Eszto
Hi!

Although I am not new to genealogical research, it has been a few years since I last dedicated time and effort into finding more about my ancestors.

I am in search of the Eszto family. I believe they came from Obad (my daughter happened across this gem this week!). My grandfather, Nicholas (Miklos, Nick) came to America (Baltimore, MAryland) via the port of New York with his father Anton in 1913. I have the original passports that were stamped. I cannot find any ship logs or passenger lists that verify the name of the ship or date of arrival.

Grandpop's mom was left behind to come at a later date. Her name was Elizabeth. I believe there may have been a younger sister, as well. Anton was still in Baltimore, Maryland when my Grandparents married in 1919. I have wedding pictures that show him with Grandpop. I have no idea why Elizabeth and the younger girl never came here, or what happened to them. My brother is in posession of a bank book with 300 (dollars?) that was meant for their passage money to America, but since it was never used.....??? Anton does not show up on any American census records, so I am assuming he returned home at some point in time.

I'm not sure if this helps with anything, but I do have a family portrait of my grandfather when he was about 10 years old with his Mom, Dad and I think his grandmothers from each side of the family. On the front of the portrait in the lower left hand corner, is Kuhn, M. and in the lower right hand corner, Temesvar.

Any and all information will be greatly appreciated!

Hi and thanks! I wasn't expecting such a quick response. I haven't heard of One-Step. (More research! Good thing my youngest just turned 18 and can't say I'm ingoring her for dead relatives! grin <>)

Seriously -- thanks again. I'm off to check that out right now. I didn't realize just how large Hungary was until recently.

Hy
I must be one of your great-grand father's descendent, my grand father was called Esztň Miklňs and was born in 1916 somewhere in the south of Hungary (now in ex Yougoslavia). His father was called Péter (just as like me) and was Professor of Geodesia at the University of Sopron (still in Hungary..) but as far as I know he had severel brothers but I never heard about.
My grandfather made a lot of reaserch on his family and I know he found members from Hungary, Transsylvania,Slovakia and France.

So the Family's history is the next: in the 17th century they moved from France to Hungary (in Transsylvania) (after the extermination of allmost all of the population by the turkish army, the emperor Maria-Theresia called handworkers and educated citizens from the other countrys of Europe) where they worked in the mining bureau (they have been ingeneers for every generation untill my father who 's stil working in the National Mining Bureau of Hungary !). Then they moved to the southern regions of Hungary when the tukish empire retired from the Balkans, and the lived there untill the fisrt Word War. My grand father became also ingeneer as his brother and his 3 sons. Unfortunately he died when I was 12, and we never found all of the documents he collected.
I hope you will find more about our familys.
Dr Peter ESZTO

Greetings Peter!

I believe we corresponded a couple of years ago about our ancestors, then lost touch. Unfortunately, I haven't found much more than when we emailed one another. Did you ever receive the copies of the pictures, bank book (I think that's what it is...) and Grandpop's passport that I mailed to you?

If you'd like, we can move to regular email. My account is mommanestor -a-t- yahoo -d-o-t- com

It's very nice hearing from you once again!
