lizvisentin: searching for ancestors
I am searching for the ancestry of my father's family. The last name is Konkoly. He emmigrated to Canada from the Rumince area in 1949. My grandfather emmigrated to Canada in 1927. My grandmother stayed in ruminced as did most of my father's siblings. I am trying to find a record of the family that remained as well as documents for my grandfather and/or father.

Val: Re: searching for ancestors
The name Konkoly is not very common in Hungary.
You can try to contact Dr. Istvan Konkoly, Bishop of Szombathely, Vas county.
His adress is: Szombathely, Berzsenyi Dániel tér 3. H-9702
he was born in Kerkaszentmiklós, now Tornyiszentmiklós, Zala county. He has an extended family, and i am sure he has lot of information. he is a very educated man and most likely speaks english.
His Phone number is: 011-36-94-312-890 or 312-890.
Fax: 318-538, after dialing the other numbers before.
Good luck!

There are a handful of konkolies in Australia. Just do a google search to find them. there are also a number of paintings of konkolies from hungary if you do a google image search. the konkolyies i know were called istvan or tibor, but they had brothers who were killed or disappeared whose names are now unknown but were born in pozba.

thank you very much for the information. My father's family spoke Hungarian, even though they lived in Czechoslovakia. Thus, I can read hungarian, but not Czechoslovakian which makes searching difficult at times! I will save your information and follow this lead.

Your welcome. The www.zoznamst.sk has an English version (words way on top of the screen). The old church records will be in Hungarian or Latin. Check out the website:
www.bmi.net/jjaso
The only website I posted without English version is http://mapy.atlas.sk . In that case, you can use www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
Since there are two phone listings for KONKOLYs in Rumince's phone book, why not send a letter or even take a chance on a phone call. It is possible that your distant relatives speak Hungarian.

lizvisentin: Re: searching for ancestors
What a quick reply and once again great information. I can read Hungarian and some Latin, so I will be able to check out the church link and hopefully understand most of it. I know that my father has one living sister in Rumince and she speaks Hungarian, but no English. His other siblings who remained in Rumince has passed away in the last five years. It is an old family. My father was the youngest of 8 children and if he were alive today, he'd be 78. There might be children of his siblings who still live there and they would speak Hungarian. My parents did not teach us much about their relatives and I would have to make a call to an aunt just to get their names. You have given my some very concrete information to follow up, and once again I thank you. It would be nice to find out more of my history as most of relatives are now gone and information about their past will soon be my only link to my family. I would like to do this also for my 13 year old son so that he can have a greater sense of his family history. Are you Hungarian by any chance? Are you also on a family search?

Your welcome. It might be best to send a letter with family information and a photo of your father and see what comes back. The young generation is learning English so no problem there. You might even get a reply in English and thru the internet if you include your e-mail address.
It is possible that there are more KONKOLYs living in Rumince but if they have a cell phone or no phone they will not show up. One more KONKOLY in this same area code in Tornala. If you type a 0 (zero) in area code you will get all the listings for this or any name.
I am sure you checked in Ellis Island website as there were 96 KONKOLYs that came to America.

Not Hungarian, born in Eastern region of Slovak Republic. Go on several boards to help others with research.
