Zlatica : Re: Geneaology
Marianne

Is that the correct spelling of the ancestral village?
A good locator www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
is not locating a village by that spelling. No church records in LDS-Mormons website under that name. There are films from Somogyszenpal, Somogyszil, and Somogyszob all in Somogy megye.

Do post on Hungary's Ancestry and Genforum board if you have not.
Hungary's phone site : www.matav.hu/english/index.html
I went to look in Ellis Island website. No one passed thru from that village but there was a KIS from Somogyseil.

After I clicked and posted, I thought of looking in EI site if there was anyone from a town named Geszti. There were KIS and KISS from this town. This town of Geszti is in Somogy megye.
KISS lists in GESZT (if that is your Geszti)
The LDS-Mormons site is listing church records of Geszti which was later called Somogygeszti. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.

Marianne: Re: Geneaology
Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to help - it was very much appreiciated - yes this is the correct spelling for the village. I just wondered if there was anyone in a highish office that I could write to in the actual village. It is only a very small place so maybe would have a mayor or somesuch person. I have been on various Geanology sites regarding research in Hungary but always have to end up with the Mormans and they so far has been unable to help and they tend to deal mostly with the Kiss's in America. I will try again and thank you very much. King regards - Marianne

Thank you so much for the information - I have written to the Mayor of Somogygeszti and I am now awaiting his reply. I hope that he can help me if not in person then by passing my questions on to someone in the village. Many thanks for your help once again.

Marianne: Re: Geneaology
Thank you again - yes I have seen this site but it does not really tell me very much - I am not really interested in the castle as it is today only as it was in the day when it was owned by the Jankovich-Besan's. I believe that my grandparents may have worked there - certainly my grandfather was born in the village and worked for the Jankovichs so it seems likely that he would have been quite well know in the surrounding area. Hence my search for any relatives of my grandfather that could still be around in the village - someone may still be alive who can just about remember him or his family - maybe not! Was glad to know how many people still live there - thank you.
Regards
Marianne

Marianne: Family Tree Research
Hello Somogygeszti from England
Please, please, please will someone out there help me with my family research. I feel that there must still be people by the name of Kiss amoungst the 590 people that live there and maybe they could be my relatives. I hope to visit one day in the near future and maybe we would meet if you are. If this is not the correct place to write to please point me in the correct direction and I can move on from there and maybe get some results. I have written to the Mayor of Somogygeszti and have never heard a word from anyone, so any help from anyone would be very much appreiciated.
Best Wishes
Marianne

Marianne

There is that possibility that the letter never arrived to Hungary. Just something to think about since you did not receive a reply from the Mayor.
www.babocsa.hu
The phone book of town of Babocsa is listing KOVACS, KIS and KISS. Maybe you would like to send out few letters with family information. Do include a photo of your ancestor for that extra visual aid.

bkriszti: Dávid
Dédanyám - Dávid Julianna - Gesztin született 1900-ban. Biztos más is kutat ezen a településen, jó lenne tapasztalatot cserélni.

Greetings,
My grandfather was born in 1899 in Geszti. I was there even yesterday and visited the cementry (the place where the grand-grandparents are laying) Visited also a "fare-relative", too. She said that the church books written since the mid of 1750s has been transported to Mernye, because the serve in Geszti has been finished. I plane to visit Mernye soon, because I'll search for other villages, too.

Sorry Marrianne,

The Bookkeeping by the Hungarian State has been begun in 1895.
The village Geszt was registered in the neighbour village, Mernye.

Under Mernye at LDS (Mormon):
(list)

Születtek =born
Házasultak = married
Halottak = died

(sorry, not exactly translated but it contains the most important informations)

Jó tanács: telefonon egyeztess időpontot a plébánossal, mert igen elfoglalt és nehéz ember. Egyszer voltam ott anyakönyvet kutatni, azóta inkább a levéltárba lekérem a mikrofilmet.
