astrelick: Sztrelecz
My grandfather was born Michael Sztrelecz on 31 August 1874 in Vyborna, Now the Slovak Republic. On various records he immigrated to the U.S. either in 1893 or 1898. He used the following spellings: Mikhal Strelec, Mihal Strelick, Mike Strelety and Michael Strelecz. Any information on the Hungarian spelling Sztrelecz or the Hungarian association with Vyborna would be appreciated.

What language did your grandfather speak? Keep in mind the time frame of the time of birth of your ancestor.
Up to 1918 the records would reflect Austria-Hungary. After the fall of this empire several new countries were formed and one was Czechoslovakia which in 1993 separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.
Here is an old Austria-Hungary era map :

No listing in Vyborna's phone book but the name exists in SK.

Mihaly Sztrelecz would be Magyar/Hungarian spelling.
Michal Strelec would be a Slovak spelling.

The village of Vyborna falls into Spis region of SK.

New information. My grandfather immigrated to U.S. as Mihaly Sztrelecz, arriving on 23 March 1893 in New York from Antwerp on the Belgenland. Two years ago my wife and I visited Vyborna, SK, got a copy of the 1859 Hungarian census that listed the house number, occupants, animals, etc. The house is still standing and we spoke with neighbors who showed us a German cemetery and provided more information. Very impressed with the countryside around Vyborna. Only disappointment was to see the large number of Romas in the town and the poor condition of the areas they lived in.

Nice to hear you got to go to ancestral village.
The situation with Romas is like a double edge sword.
