robert chico: searching
Searching for family named Csako in about 1840-1855 period. My grandfather, Janos Csako was born 10 April 1850 in Szent Maria. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Bob

A map of Austria-Hungary :
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910
The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center)website is listing a Roman Catholic church records of Szent Maria which is in Lipto megye (now Slovak Republic)and seems there was another Szent Maria which is in Zala megye and in Croatia.
There were 41 CSAKOs that passed thru Ellis Island. Take a look for possible other ancestors.
To locate an Ellis Island manifest in One Step use :
www.stevemorse.org
The SK's phone site is at : www.zoznamst.sk and a spelling CSAKO and C'AKO shows up.

Kevin Toth: Re: searching
Bodrogszentmaria is in southeast Slovakia and was once part of Zemplen megye (county). It was destroyed by a flood in the 1920s and was later rebuilt at a site near the original location. It was first named Svata Maria and was later changed to Bodrog. I know this because my great grandfather Toth Istvan was born there. The village was mostly Greek Catholic.

Bob Chico: Re: searching
Kevin, Last August I visited SzentMaria in SK. There was no mention of "Bodrog" on any sign there. The town name was written in both SK and HU.

Hi,
Szent Maria has been 90% hungarian in ethicity since it was founded before 1240 AD. During Communist times it was renamed "Bodrog" after the river the flows near it. This is because calling a village "Saint Mary" was not acceptable for the communists. After communism it was renamed Svata Maria in Slovakian, and Szent Maria in Hungarian. Hungarians in Hungary often call it Bodrogszentmaria to differentiate it from all the other towns called Szent Maria.

As others have said the original village was destroyed in a flood in the 1920's and moved to the other side of the levy bank near Palfoldje. The village was owned by the Catholic church during Feudal times, not the nobility. The village is about half Catholic and half Greek Catholic. There are a few protestants also.

I spent a lot of time as a child there, but I haven't been there since. I think there are people called Csako in the village.

Some links for the town. The second link is for the local council. Someone there may help you. They are unlikely to speak english. The council website is in Slovakian, but they all seem to be Hungarians. Hopefully you can communicate with them.
