Szent Maria has been 90% hungarian in ethicity since it was founded before 1240 AD. During Communist times it was renamed "Bodrog" after the river the flows near it. This is because calling a village "Saint Mary" was not acceptable for the communists. After communism it was renamed Svata Maria in Slovakian, and Szent Maria in Hungarian. Hungarians in Hungary often call it Bodrogszentmaria to differentiate it from all the other towns called Szent Maria.
As others have said the original village was destroyed in a flood in the 1920's and moved to the other side of the levy bank near Palfoldje. The village was owned by the Catholic church during Feudal times, not the nobility. The village is about half Catholic and half Greek Catholic. There are a few protestants also.
I spent a lot of time as a child there, but I haven't been there since. I think there are people called Csako in the village. |
