Firedoc: Szentgyorgy/Svaty Jur
I found today on this site Janos/Johann Blaschko in the 1891 Trade Directory. A blacksmith in Szentgyorgy. My grandmother Antonia was born here in 1901. I am hoping to find someone with knowledge of this town prior to 1901. Janos emigrated about 1904/06. His wife Catharina/Katalin (Posh-Follrich) and 4 children emigrated in 1908, then another child in 1909 and one in 1910.

To view the baptismal and Blaschko web page

I am also interested in knowing the Roman Catholic church(es) in Szentgyorgy abt. 1890 and of course either of these families.

Thank you, Doc

Hello Firedoc,

(Thank you very much for the RadixIndex subscription, hope you find it useful.)

I'm sure Zlatica will help you with sites, here are some that I don't see him to mention ;)

There is an ongoing auction for old postcards by the Hungarian firm Profila. One of the 22000 postcards shows Szentgyörgy: http://www.profila.hu/kep2.asp?szam=19280 .

Here are 2 large size, 1:200,000 old military maps of the region:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/200e/35-48.jpg (original, almost 4 mb)
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/tantort/2003/palyazat/35-48_pozsony.jpg
(recently redrawn)

Check these pages for more sheets of the same series:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/tantort/2003/palyazat/index.htm

Sväty Júr has its German name on the maps (St. Georgen), just like the other places (Bratislava - Pressburg etc.).

Szentgyörgy/Sväty Júr was known for its wine growing.

Radix: Re: Szentgyorgy/Svaty Jur
Sorry for the confusion about the poster of the last one. It was me, Janos Bogardi / Radix. Before posting I tried the login for a user who could not access the site for some reason.

Greets,

Janos Bogardi / Radix.

Posted two more posts to your Blaschko query here on Radix.

If you go to www.svatyjur.sk website and click on Historicke Fotografie you should see some old postcards.

The Slovak churches do not go by or have a name of a saint like you know it here in USA. Yes there is a Saint in this case most likely George / Juraj and there is a pilgrimage/ homage day to the Saint. The church records will not have a name of a saint on them only that they are Roman Catholic or Evangelical or ??
The village where I was born, only one church and Roman Catholic. The pilgrimage day is July 26, St. Ann / Anna so than you can say that this is the name of a church but my baptismal certificate does not have Svata Anna / Saint Ann anywhere only Rimsko-Katolicky kostol / Roman Catholic church in .... Most likely the larger towns already have the name of a saint. I am only stating the fact from the little village that I was born in.
The present SK's atlas is showing two churches. In the time of your ancestor's birth maybe only one church was in existance.

Firedoc: Re: Szentgyorgy/Svaty Jur
Thank you Janos.....I looked at the maps and saved a couple of them. I also looked at the postcards. This link http://svatyjur.host.sk/english.php let me read in English and see Svaty Jur up close for the first time.

And finding my Ggf Janos Blaschko in the 1891 Hungarian Industry & Trade Directory really made my day. And the many people as yourself that are willing to help is awesome.

Thanks again and for your time, Doc

Firedoc: Re: Szentgyorgy/Svaty Jur
Thank you Zlatica

And I did go to the Svaty Jur site and view the postcards and I was sent to the same site but the English version and read the history.....I was very pleased to read about were my grandmother was from.

I do not know that much about religons and churches. I will read about the Lutheran Church tomorrow or today your time Friday.

Thanks a million, Doc

Doc

It is still Thursday in Ohio but by the time I send this it will be Friday.
You must have overlooked the www.svatyjur.sk site when I gave it in your Chrappa post in 2002.
Some sites have changed since that post and some not there.
