A good locator www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
is locating village Viska in Ukraine, not far from Slovak Republic's border.
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Ung megye to locate Viharos which is now Viska, Ukraine.
Use One step www.stevemorse.org to locate people coming from Viharos and Viska. You need to register to www.ellisislandrecords.org but no money.

Mary would have come thru as Maria or Marya.
Did locate a Maria LESAK coming thru Ellis Island from Siszkofalu (Viszkofalu). Is that your ancestor?

Zlatica : Re: Lesak, Leszak
You are most welcome, Sgt. Mike

I usually get notified by Radixforum and this time nothing. Ah, how we wish the village was in Slovak Republic but it is not. The search for distant relatives or ancestral information not easy but it is getting there, this being Ukraine. The Slovak Republic allowed the LDS-Mormons to film the church records but Ukraine did not.
Come out on http://genforum.com and www.ancestry.com/community and post a query on appropriate boards. I know of few people whose ancestors were from Havaskoz aka Ljuta. www.iabsi.com/gen/public you can read upon one person's trip to the village.

Just a tidbit of information. Surname BURAK and LYSAK does show up in Slovak Republic. www.zoznamst.sk
Who knows maybe the Lysaks from SK were originally from Ruthenia - present Ukraine.

Your welcome.

See you posted on Bill Tarkulich's site. There were few FEDORNAKs that came thru EI from (mis)spelled Ticho. The village is in Ung megye, slightly South-East of Viharos as Tiha.

She did not mention an amount? Hard to say but for sure not the US minumum social security. I bet, maybe $100 but of course depends on her job. Yes, it is monthly.
You might post the question on Ukraine's Ancestry and Genforum.

Hi there,
Not sure if I can help but my family came from the same village you are asking about and I went to visit it. It is a very little village. My family left to the States after the war, they were Jewish.

M: Searching for village
My Grandfather, Vasil, was a Slovic immigrant who entered the US through Ellis Island on August 17, 1912. He passed away 20 years ago at age 96. I was told that he was born and raised in a village located in the Trans Carpathian Mountain Region. I always believed that he was from Czecheslovakia. However, the Ellis Island manifest lists him as Wasyl Rejka, from Tiha, Hungary, arriving on the steam ship Bremmen. A different page lists other passengers as arriving from Tyho, Hungary. Are both of these names in fact the same village (Tiha and Tyho)? Are either of these village names spelled correctly? Does the village still exist by the same today?
Thank you for your assistance.

Up ot 1918 it was A-H http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm After the fall of A-H several new countries were formed and one was Czechoslovakia, which in 1993 separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.
Your ancestor was Ruthenian/Byzantine Catholic.
