Dear John,

It is possible that your surname is of Hungarian origin, since in Hungarian “fa” is a noun meaning “tree, wood”. Although in Rumania there is a Hungarian minority consisting of approx. 2 million people (mainly in Transylvania), I didn’t find the “Fa” surname in the Rumanian phone books. Thus it would be more useful, as also other people suggested, to look for this surname in Hungary.
Of course, being a very short word, “Fa” could be a surname also in other unrelated languages, like Chinese or other East-Asia languages.
