thomas_gegeny: Re: History of Gegeny11/05/2005, 00:26:05
Yes, the name is Hungarian. My grandparents on my father's side (and other family) emigrated to America from Hungary in the early 1900s. There is a village near Ibrany (a larger town) where more Gegenys reside. I know that my family members are from that region for sure. It is a very old family name, from what I understand and the research my father has done. The family crest is a red chevron (like an upside-down v-stripe) on a plain silver background. There has been some indication that the original family may have come from elsewhere in Europe but was awarded land for service in battle. This would have been as early as the year 1200. There are too many holes, however. I wish I could take a year off and go to Hungary to research all of this! Thomas P.
