I think that the original name is still controversial because the name sounds much like many similar names and can be confusing. But I also think that these people, wherever they came from deep into the history, became Romanized or Magyarized. Since they were Greek Catholics from upper Transylvania, there were most likely alreay Romanians at the end of the 18th century.
For much deeper ancestry and origin, only a genetical profile could solve the matter (www.familytreedna.com) or the Genographic Project run by the National Geographic (I'm participating in both projects; not cheap, but very interesting).
