Different alphabet / pronounciation. Just like English Y makes a J sound and a W makes a V sound in a Slavic language.
Yes, it is pronounced as Bee-ro in "old country".
You need a precise place of birth to proceed with your research whether it will be in Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia or ?
