Toni: Re: Babicz Family Tree
I am new to this site. I started looking for ancestors about 18 months ago and found many discrepancies in our surname. My grandfather came to Ellis Island in 1903 with the surname Babis the ship passenger information states his place of residence was Jodlowka Galicia at that time it was Austria. My grandfather Leon Babis lived in PA. For some reason our name became Bobish when my father was born.
M grandfather had 12 children, my dad was the first born. I just found out yesterday that my Grandfathers name wasn't Babis or Bobish it was Babicz. So now I am on a new search for family members. Where are you from and what is the background of you family?
Thanks,
Toni Clark

Few websites for research. Have you posted on www.ancestry.com/community and http://genforum.com
Mistakes were made at the port of departure and then again by an Ellis Island volunteer.
6 villages named Jodlowka in Poland.
http://mapa.szukacz.pl
In 1990 census of names there were 2260 BABICZs and 337 BABISs in Poland. www.herby.com.pl/herby
Use One step/gold form www.stevemorse.org to find all the people that came from village Jodlowka. There is Leon BABICZ and a Leon BABIS. It would seem one and the same person.

Zlatica : Re: Babis in Jodlowka
Toni

www.ksiazka-telefoniczna.com is listing BABIS (s has a diacritical marking) in Jodl~owka. Possible that diacritical marking has something to do with pronounciation. Granted, no way to tell which one. Because of privacy law, no full address. One needs to use name of the village and the surname with the correct marking.
