garrett: esther berkovits
hi. i am looking for information on my paternal grandmother, the late esther glaser, nee berkovits, from the hamlet of kovesliget, near drahovo, in maramaros county, hungary. born bet 1885 and 1900. her family, i am told, operated a beet sugar processing facility or simply a beet farm and had been there for hundreds of years. that longevity, i'm told, was unusual for a jewish family in hungary.

The hamlet of Kovesliget is in the old Maramaros megye which now is in Ukraine.

You might want to post on Jewish board and Ukraine's board.
It is possible that a search engine might locate a website about your family's beet sugar processing facility.

150 BERKOVITSs passed thru Ellis Island and it seems that Salamon was from Kovesliget. Possible a family member.

hello,
my grandmother and entire family is also Berkovits, berkowitz from kovesliget. its been a few years since ive spent time on my own family roots project but I ammased quite a lot of info on Drahovo etc..

The Solomon referenced in the Ellis Island site is my great grandfather who made a short trip to the US in 1911 with his brother in law to determine if he wanted to move his family to the US.

Berkovits - Topolovka forum: mesnyc: BERKOVITZ from Topoloka
David
I am the only surviving member of my family as a result of the Holocaust. Hungary is asking that I prove that I am related to my mother Etel Berkovits, my father, Samuel Berkovits and my two sisters Magda Berkovits and Klari Berkovits. Yad Vashem did send paperwork to the Hungarian government that my family did die in the Holocaust.

Here lies my problem. In order for the Hungarian government to give compensation, I have to prove my relationship to the above named persons. The only way that is going to happen is with a birth certificate which I do have nor do I know how to pursure getting such a document. Can anyone suggest a way that I might obtain something legal with my parents names saying that I was there child. I was born in Galocs, Czechoslavakia which became Hungary in 1938.

Any information or a lead to further my search would be greatly appreciated.
