Linda Szynal: family from Herczegfalva
My great-grandparents, Johann and Thereze (nee Wushing) Birkner, along with their children, (Thereze, Anne, Franz, and Ignatz), left for the United States in March 1902 and settled in Passaic, NJ, USA. Franz is my grandfather. A great-uncle and his family, Josef Birkner, left on the same ship, but settled in Saskatchewan, Canada. They were from Herzcegfalva, now known I think as Mezofalva. I am looking for any information on relatives as well as ancestors.
Thank you!

Linda

The town of Herczegfalva /Mezofalva falls into Fejer megye, Hungary.
The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :

Hello Linda,

There's a group of researchers focusing on Herczegfalva: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HerczegfalvaGenealogy/

One of them posted a note here on the forum: http://www.radixforum.com/places/mezofalva

Hope this helps.

Hi Linda,
My great-grandparents were Josef and Elizabeth (Goldschmidt) Birkner. They arrived with daughters Anna and Elizabeth in 1902 and settled near Wakaw, Saskatchewan. Elizabeth, my grandmother, married Stephan Bauer.

lszynal: Re: family from Herczegfalva
Sorry this took so long, but somehow this site fell off my list of places to check. My g-grandfather had a brother Josef who came to the US at the same time and on the same ship - 1902 on "The Patricia". I've been able to trace some of the family back, but the Birkner side I've only been able to go back as far as Franz, born 1834, and his wife Anna Meninger, born 1836 (they would be my gggrandparents, as well as yours). Have you had any better luck? I have put this site on my favorites list and will now check back often. If you have any information or would like what I've been able to get, please email me.

puckleduard: Re: family from Herczegfalva
seems that the german speaking colony in herzcegfalva was of austrian origin; there was also a franz puckl on the same ship with you family most likely one of my own relatives. I am from austria and coming summer I will try to find out more, in fact I was already many times passing this village by car but never knew that we had family roots there. I will look for the birkners as well.

let's see.

Thank you so much for the information. We thought there had to be an Austrian connection based on stories that were passed down, but couldn't confirm anything. Keep in touch.
