Ihave family that lived in Eger I believe in the last 10 years. I believe they may have moved to a place called Ostoros. The only two names I have are Katalin Simon Botane and Boglarka Bota. Any information on these two would be very helpful. Thank you.

My Dad would like to write your Mom an e-mail. Congratulations on school I'm sure you will have a lot of fun. I really didn't think I would be able to find you on the internet I'm so glad we did. I'm amazed at how well your english has improved. Can you speak a lot of languages? Look forward to talking to you soon.

I had so much fun in Mexico. Two of my friends and I went for 10 days. I want to go back eventually. Lot's of hungarian people live in Calgary. My Dad goes twice a year to the hungarian catholic church to buy hourka and kolbass sausage and talk to people. My grandfather could speak hungarian very well but as he got older he had less people to speak with. My grandmother passed away when I was 2 years old in 1987. I have to go for school twice a year for 10 weeks each time and then I work in between. Right now I am working but I get christmas off. It's -9 degrees and sunny here right now but Calgary gets really cold in the wintertime. I still remember some hungarian but not much and I think my Dad can understand it but not speak much anymore. I'm very excited for christmas, my brother James will be coming home from the Navy on Friday.
Look forward to talking to you soon!

Terry Simon: Hello Katalin!
Katalin

I am Terrance Joachim Simon. To keep up the family tradition My sons name is James Joachim Simon And Marys middle name is Pearl which is english for Piroska. My grandfather Joachim senior would have been 103 this year. How old would Antal have been ? He must have been a lot younger. My grandfather had 2 children. Julie was born in Hungary. My granfather then came to Canada 1n 1929 or 1930. He was working in a coal mine in Nordegg Alberta and brought my grandmother Piroska Simon ( Toth ) and Julie to live there. In 1931 My father Joachim Jr. was born. After a bad mine accident when my father was 8 they moved to Calgary where my grandfather worked as a car cleaner at CP Rail until he retired. I often wondered why they moved from Hungary to Canada. Maybe your mother could help tell us if she knows. Did she know my grandparents or was she too young.

I believe my grandmother died in 1980 and my grandfather in 1984 or 1985. I will find out for sure and let you know. I will send some pictures when we get your address from Bogi.

Hope this finds you all well

Lajos Reich: Re: Hello Katalin!
Greetings for everybody!
The name Pearl is the same in Hungarian: Gyöngyi (Otherwise the Margaret/Margit means also pearl/gyöngy)
The Piroska is origined from the name of the daughter St Ladislas, king of Hungary and originally it is Greek: Prisca. So, if we want to learn the Piroska in English, that is similary to the Priscilla. Prisca/Piroska/Priscilla has been saint of the Greek-Catholic Church on the name Irene. She is the matron saint of the tweens.
By the way, the Hungarian knows as name as Piros (red), its nickname could be also the Piroska. By my opinion in this way the Piroska could be also the similar to Scarlett.

Terry: Re: Katalin

Hello Katalin

That is interesting about about the family problems with Prostate problems. I have had some problems but all is well. We live in a house in an area called Lake Bonivista inside the city. We have a large Man made lake. You can swim and fish in the summer and Skate and sleigh in the winter. It can get very cold in the winter. My wifes name is Joan, she has a twin sister named Jean. She lives in Prince George BC. She has a brother also in Prince George and another sister in Cranbrook BC. Her mother and
Father are not alive. We went to Las Vegas last year with her twin sister and her husband for her 50th birthday. She works at CP Rail as a supervisor of payroll administration. I work as a rail traffic controller for CP rail. I will be 52 in April. We will have been married 30 years in June.

We decorate our house with lights on the outside and have a christmas tree and ornaments throughout the house. Exchange gifts and have a big turkey dinner. I usually eat too much. We are catholic and usually go to mass. How about you ? How old are you and your husband ? Tell me more about him. Does your mother know anything about my grandmothers family ? She was a saint of a lady. She was in a wheel chair for a long time with Arthritis. Never complained just worried about everyone else. She was a very strong Catholic and was very involved in the church when she was healthier

Mary and I went to the gravesite Tuesday. Joachim died in December 1983 and my grandmother died in January 1978.

Do you live in a house or flat ? How far away from Budapest ? How big is your city ?

Well I have to pick up the wife.

Goodbye for now hope all is well

Kati: Eger
Dear Terry!
First I would like to know how did you find my name and address, when Mary and James write 5 years ago.
Ostoros, where I live is not far from Eger. The distance is about 6 km.We live in a nice place in a house with garden.
Eger is a famous, 1000-year-old town. A lot of tourists come here, mainly germans. I.(Saint)István, our first king founded the archbishopric, that built the second biggest church of Hungary.
It's 130 km far from Budapest, in east. It's not too big (60.000 residents)but very nice with its baroque buildings and the historic castle. This castle stopped the turkish expansion in 1552 in Europe.
Eger is also the town of medicinal bath, and a big wine-grooving area, here are producted the original Egri Bikavér(Bull's Blood) and the Egri Leányka(Young Girl of Eger). We have a little wineyard too.
I know only about your grandmother's family, that her brother's son lives still in Hevesaranyos, his name is Tóth Béla. He is old.His wife died not long ago. He has a son and a daughter. I think they can't speak english. The others at next time. Greeting to you: Kati.

Bogi: To Mary!
Dear Mary!
I was in France in Cote d'Azurre with the school 4 years ago and now in June in teh italien coast with my family. We were in Venice. It was beautiful and interesting. Have you heard from this town?
Now I'm sick, I have bronchitis, and I worried that I can't go to party in Saturday night.Do you like partying?
My grandparents kept pigs and they had dinner on pig-killing day twice a year. There were a lot of hurka and kolbász. Than the relatives collected and we had dinner together.
We didn't know that your grandfather spoke Hungarian well, because the elder Joachim Simon wrote, that only his daughter, Julie can speak Hungarian. It would be good, if you could speak also Hungarian.
What kind of hungarian words do you know?
Now the weather is very bad, it's sleeting, the traffic is catastrophic.
Greeting to you!

Terry: Re: From Calgary

Katalin

My Father had all the old letters you wrote to my Grandfather. I had an interest to find out about our family back in Hungary. I was never one to write letters so I guess I just let time pass. Then as our chidren grew they were interested and started to write. We must have lost your address when you moves to Osteros. We thought you still lived in Eger. A nurse that worked in the place my Father was in made many trips to Hungary. He was in Eger and Hevesaranyos and asked if anyone knew of you. He brought many pictures back from the area and my Father had them up on his bulletin board in his room. Thank you for the information about my grandmother. I do not know anything about her family.

I still like a lot of the food my Grandmother cooked. My wife is a very good cook and has learned many recipes.

I go to the Hungarian bazaars at St Elizabeth Hungarian
church. They have them in the spring and the fall. I buy my sausage there Hourka and Kolbass. My wife likes the Hourka best. I have a little but I like the Kolbass best.

Excuse my spelling. I still cook Capustas tasta ( Noodles cabbage and butter ) Paprikas compare ( Garlic sausage potatos papika lard and onions. My favorite is Bub Levese ( Yellow bean soup ).

Do you understand english? Are you writing me the letters or Bogi ? The last time the children wrote I did not think you knew any english.

The population of Calgary is just about a million people. We may move back to BC to retire it is to big here.

Your area sound very nice. We can get to plus 30C in the summer and minus 30c or worse in the winter. What is your weather like ? It must be mild if you have vineyards there. It sounds like a nice place to visit. Maybe someday.

Goodbye for now

Hello!
I'm sorry to here that your sick. I had bronchitus last year it was terrible. I have heard of Venice I here it is beautiful. I use to go out and party with my friends a lot when I was younger but I've calmed down a bit. It seems by the time Saturday comes I'm so tired I only go out for a few hours and then to sleep. I still go out with friends throughout the week but we usually go for a coffee or to a movie. I think my Grandfather was like my Dad and could understand a lot of Hungarian but forgot how to speak. Later in his life he met a man that worked in his nursing home who was from Hungary and they use to talk all the time in Hungarian but I never knew what they talked about. Grampa always wanted to go but his eyesight was very bad. I don't know very much of the language at all just a few meals, dog and cat that sort of thing. I hope you get to go out on Saturday Bogi! Were going to a festival of lights at the zoo it should be fun.
Talk to you soon,

Dear Terry!!!!!!!
We are happy to your letters.
I believed that with Joachim uncle's death the connection broke between the hungarian and the canadian family. I'm happy that it didn't happen due to Mary and James.
I'm sorry for that neither Joachim uncle nor Your father could come to Hungary.
We would receive you at home with pleasure!
I wanted to visit Joachim Simon in Canada when I was 20 years old, but I couldn't speak english and my parents didn't allow me. I can't speak english still, so my daughter translates your letters. I learnt french and russian in the school, but I forgot them.
In 1983 when my uncle didn't answer to my letter, I thought, that he died.
My father tell the story. Joachim bought winter boots, he was very happy, because the poor was big.
I would like to tell you from Hevesaranyos that it's about 25 km far from Eger in North. Lots of people have left the village and moved to Eger. The job-chance is higher in Eger.
I'm 41 my housband, József is 45 years old. His mother and brother live in Eger. We meet them almost every day.
I wait your answer.

My grandfather always talked about making a trip to Hungary. He wanted me to go with him when I was 18. We did not follow up on the plans for some reason. If ever you and your husband or Bogi would like to make a trip to Canada you would be welcome to stay with us. We have plenty of room.

James our son got home from Victoria on Friday. We drove to the airport and picked him up. He will probablt write you and Bogi soon. Do you have a Car ? What type of vehicles are there in Hungary ? We have a Chrysler Alero and a Dodge Neon. We have Canadian dollars here they are worth less than the Euro. It would cost about 1.65 dollars to buy 1 Euro. Are Euros your curreny Now or something else ? How much do things cost there ? 12 eggs cost $1.89
4 litres of milk cost $3.19.

Dear Terry!
Thank you for your inviting, we may go there sometime.
In Hungary there are many types of cars: BMW, Ford, Wolkswagen, Mazda, Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Mercedes,Fiat,...from Germany, Japan, USA, Italy, France.
The forint is still our currency. 257 forint 1 Euro, so here 12 eggs are 1,54 dollars. We can buy only 1L milk, which costs 130-190 forint. In Canadian Dollar 3,34dollar 4L milk. The 98 octane petrol is about 240 Ft.It must be cheaper in Canada. Here the people buy the smaller cars, that do not too much.We have got 2 cars, a Ford Escort Touring and a Lada Samara.
Where do you go on holiday?Do you have hobbies?

Our petrol now is 69.9 cents per litre. It was 90.0 about a monthe ago. It goes up and down with oil prices. The wife and I used to Curl a lot when we were younger but when we moved to Calgary we do not do it anymore. We have golfed for many years and we still do it quite often. We enjoy gardening but in Calgary it is not a long season and hard to grow some thinks.

The wife and I have been to Las Vegas a few times. Lots to see and do there. We go back to British Columbia often, especially when my father was alive. We used to back to Nelson a lot. About a 7 hour drive from Calgary.

We are going to Mexico Jan 26th for a week. We have never been and are looking forward to it. Where do you vacation ? What are your hobbies ?

When we were first married we went to Hawaii 2 times it was nice but now I here it is to busy there now.

Hello again

I did not know your father was in the war. My grandfather never mentioned it. My father had a house in Nelson with a large garden on the bottom lot. A few years ago my brother built a house on the lot. When we went to Nelson we would usually stay with my brother or on the lake. My wifes mother had a house 10 km from Nelson on the Kootenay lake. Her cousin owns it now but we are welcome to stay with him. When we went to Nelson we would visit my father and my brother and his family. I will tell you more about them later.

It sounds like you like to travel. I do not know much about Hungarian history. We have a dog named Georgia. She is 7. A small dog shitzu yorki is the breed.

I was shopping today and looked for the wine you mentioned. The wife and I like white wine not red. All I could find in white was Egri Harslevelu from Eger. I bought a bottle and we will have it at Christmas diner. I am like my Father and Grandfather. I like my beer.

You and your family have a Merry Chrismas

Goodbye for now Terry

Kati: Re: Hello Katalin
Dear Terry,
we celebrate Christmas like you. At Christmas Eve we decorate the pine tree and give the presents to each other. In Hungary usually fish, stuffed cabbage are cooked, and poppy-seed rolls are baked. Now we prepared roast goose.
Did you like the wine?
My mother goes every Sunday and now also at Christmas in the church, we go rarely.
In the TV the midnight mass was broadcasted from the cathedral of Eger.
Here the temperature is about 0 degree. In this winter it was snowing first time, but it was not much. We know from the TV, that in America it's very cold.
I hope James has arrived home safely at Christmas.
I wish you and your family Merry Christmas!

Dear Mary!
Don't you celebrate the last day of the year? It's the sylvester. I'll go to Szeged in a party. There live my classmate's brother, the party 'll be by him. The only difficulty is the travelling. It can be 5-6 hours.
To Christmas I got a hi-fi system from my parents. I'm glad to it. Now we'll go to my grandmother and my godfather to spend the hole afternoon with them.
Marry Christmas to you and your family!

Terry Simon: Merry Christmas
Dear Katalin

My wife Joan has a family tradition. We do not eat meat on christmas eve. We have perogies ( dough stuffed with cheese and potatoes ). A Ukranian tradition. We also had shrimp and Salmon. We open our presents on Christmas morning and have a beakfast of leftovers from last night. We just finished.

We will have a Turkey potatoes brussel sprouts stuffing and more. Lots to eat for sure. James is going to a movie with a friend today and Mary is going to her boyfriends house for a while.

Merry Christmas Terry

James Simon: To my relatives in Hungary...
Hello all,

I am James, brother of Mary and son to Joan and Terry Simon. I have followed along with all of your correspondence with my family so far. I am so glad that they were able to contact after all of these years.

As you have probably heard, I am 26, I live in Victoria, British Columbia and work for the Canadian Navy as a radar operator. I have been stationed on one of our Area Air Defence Destroyer's the "HMCS (Her Majesty's Canadian
Ship) Algonquin for the last year. I have been lucky enough to travel quite bit in that time and have visited Seattle, San Diego, Anchorage and Pearl Harbour in the US, as well I was able to participate in a goodwill trip this
last summer to Japan, China and South Korea. I am enjoying my work very much and they are in turn allowing me to finish my studies by correspondence.

Before joining the Navy I went to the University of Calgary and studied Canadian/Military History. I am still working on my Bachelor of Arts Degree while I work. I know a small amount of knowledge about Hungary's history... more specifically the Invasion of the Monguls, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire surrounding the First World War, World War Two and
the resistence, as well as the Cold War and the uprising of 1956. But all of this is very general and not too indepth.

My father and I were comparing Hungary's size the other day to Canada and the province of Alberta that we are in. Hungary fits 7 times into our province and is similiar in size to an island off of our west coast called Vancouver Island (were I am currently stationed). I was amazed to note that your country's population is over 10 million, where our whole country is only 32 million... with Alberta and British Columbia comprising only 5 million together. The countryside in Hungary must be a lot more developed
than it is here and almost every inch of land must be spoken for I am sure.

Once we recieve your e-mail address by regular mail I have asked my father to forward it to me, so that I can keep in touch with you as well. I hope that your holidays were full of rest, relaxation and little bit of fun. It
has been a wonderful time these last few days spent at home with my family and friends. I have been fortunate enough to have been able to spend the last 3 Christmas's in a row with my family while I am serving in the Navy.
My ship is on ready alert as of the 27th to sail, so I fly back to Victoria tomorrow night to stand by on call. I hope that you all have a great "Sylvester" celebration on the 31st, as we call it "New Year's Eve" here. I plan on enjoying myself that night out on the coast if we are not at sea... haha.

My father warned me about how much I should write, but I have never been one to say anything too quickly. I hope to keep in touch in the near future and I promise that there will be more questions. If you have any for me or the rest of the family just ask. I have been working on a family tree of some sort in the last few years and perhaps I can ask for your assistance over the next few months.

Szívélyes üdvözlettel,

James

(I hope I translated that correctly... if not, I will work on it a bit)

The Bóta family: Re: To my relatives in Hungary...
Hello James!
We were glad to your letter and you wrote perfect in Hungarian "Szívélyes üdvözlettel".
It can be great for you, that you were in so many far-away places, but isn't it dangerous, that you serve for the Navy?

In Hungary there isn't so big temperature variation like in Canada. Here it's rare, that the temperature is under -15 degrees in winter. It happened already, that it was about 10 degrees in February.

Our land's area in 93.000 km2,(We think it's bigger than Vancouver Island.)after in 1920 because of the Trianon peace-treaty 2/3 part of the old land was disannexed. The Hungarians can't forget this thing. In the surrounding lands a lot of hungarian people live, in Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia. From Hungary so many people emigrated to America in 1920,and after the revolution and war of independence of 1956.

I help you with pleasure in making your family tree. You can ask everything, in that you're interested. In the cemetery of Hevesaranyos is still your great-great grandfather's grave, whose name was Simon Imre, his wife was Kovács Rozália. We take care of it.Simon Imre had two sisters, but we don't know their name. Their father was Simon Mátyás, a smith. He moved to Hevesaranyos from an other village.

The Christmas holiday was so short, we are already working now. Bogi's holiday lasts further, but she must learn a lot.

We wish you every success to your work, spend the Sylvester cheerful and happy New Year!

Yours sincerely,
the Bóta family

Hello Terry! Happy New Year! We have got your e-mail and the photos. The children changed a lot compared to the old photo. We're glad to see your father.
I and Bogi sent e-mail to you,but they weren't delivered. After it we have got an e-mail from the "Internet Mail Delivery". It says that:
"Reason: Remote SMPT server has rejected address,
...unknown or illegal alias:" ( here was your e-mail address).Do you know the reason of it? We don't know why it is.
Here the weather is not too cold, the temperature is about 0-minus 5 degrees.
When will Mary come from Vancouver?

I don’t know the etymology of the name “Bóta”, but I think it is not quite correct to assert that it is of Turkish origin (this would mean Osman-Turkish), but rather, taking into account it’s phonetic shape, from Old Turkic, like many other Hungarian names (first names, surnames, or clan names, that eventually became also place names, etc.).

Buna dimineata, Iosif,

Multa bafta!

Am uitat sa mentionez in mesajul anterior ca imigrarea unor italieni pe teritoriul vechii Ungarii putea avea loc si in timpuri mai recente, cand Ungaria (inclusiv Ardealul) si nordul Italiei se aflau in cadrul aceluiasi stat - monarhia habsburgica.

Lajos Reich: Re: Bota
Feri, you are very impolite. And impolite on double way!
At first: the start of the correspondence is in English, so, by the unwrited orders, must write in English. At second: you are Hungarian, why you are writing in Rumanian?
Do you think, all of the correspondencers understand Rumanian, or do you want to take to secret your thoughts?
By the way, the origine of the word bot (correct spelling bóta) is discussed, and the smallest probability is its Ancient Turk origine (the ancient Turk is not the same to the present Turk. The present Turks were originally named Seljucs.
So, probably the origines are by the changing of the middle consonants (made it to softer or harder), what is very common also in the Slavic and Finno-Ugrian languages, and could be from a personal name or any attribute. The most probable variations are:
- the most probable origin is the word buda. It is an ancient Hungarian (székely/secler) name, means idol
- the second probable variations: it was a Kumanian (kún) or Pecheneg (besenyő) word. Its meaning is not clear, but very probably also idol
- the third probable is from the German fuldahwa (look at town Fulda), what could be the preliminary of the Slavic word bdva (in English hole)or converted the fulda been from the bdva? Nobody knows.

fericzobor: Re: Bota
I apologize if I disturbed somebody by writing in Rumanian. I just saw that Iosif is from Rumania, so I replied him in Rumanian (there are also other instances in Radix Forum where a discussion started in English and continued in Slovakian, Rusin, or whatever...)
In fact, there was no secret, I just repeated what I wrote in previous messages in English and Hungarian (that phonetically the Bóta name is rather Old Turkic than Osman-Turkish), adding that also an Italian origin (suggested by Iosif) would be plausible, since there were some episodes of Italian immigration in Hungary during the past history.
I don't understand why would be impolite for a Hungarian to write in Rumanian (in fact I live in Bucharest, Rumania, and am half Hungarian, half Rumanian). I speak, read and write fluently also in English, German, and French, and don't feel impolite for this reason...
Best regards,

Az 1988-as kiadás I. kötet 243. oldalán szerepel Borsodbóta település.
