Ceranko: Lost history
My family immigrated here in the states in 1914. We are from somewhere in Hungary. My grandmothers maiden name was Elizabeth Fodor, my grandfathers was Al Czeranko. I'd like to know the meaning of our last name and where we came from in Hungary. And what our family history is. Are we hunagrian or slovak? I love history and live in Austin Texas. Please let me know !

Ceranko

Are you Hungarian or Slovak! What was language of your ancestors? Did they considered themselves to be Magyar or Slovak/Rusyn?
What records have you located on your ancestors? Did they come thru Ellis Island?

Zlatica : Re: CZERANKO, FODOR
Ceranko

Is this your grandfather in SSDI http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
CZERANKO Alexander. His SS-5Form should have a place of birth and names of his parents.
You need to have a precise place of birth to proceed with the research. If your grandfather was naturalized citizen, his naturalization also will have his place of birth. If they married in US than the state marriage application will have a place of birth.

Ceranko: Re: Lost history
My family was definitely Magyar. They spoke Hungarian and did not consider themselves Slovaks

Zlatica: Re: Lost history
Good and where were they from in Hungary?
Were they Ruthenian as the ending KO sometimes suggests.
The roots way, way back could be Slavic for the surname CERANKO/CZERANKO. Only further research into the church records would tell.

Do you know where your ancestor was born? Location is the magic word.
