lworos: Helen Demeter

My Father was born in New York City, to a Martin Joseph Woros and Helen Demeter who were born in Hungry. If anyone out there knows any information about my father/grand parents, I would appreciated a response. My father was born 3-28-1917, Martin Joseph, Born in Hungry, abt 1885, Helen Demeter born in Hungry abt 1890. Thank you in advance for any response.

Lisa,

you need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research. Did your ancestors have social security numbers, were naturalized citizens,pass thru Ellis Island?
All of this papers would provide important information.

17 WOROSs, 399 VOROSs, and 805 DEMETERs passed thru Ellis Island. You might want to take a look at some of those manifests. Your ancestors did not pass thru Ellis Island with the first names that you have for them if they were from Hungary.

Just a tidbit of information and nothing to do with your ancestors at this time. The Slovak Republic's phone book is listing a VOROS (with two dots on first O) and DEMETER.
The W gives the Slavic V sound in a name and thus sometimes W was subsituted once in America.

The LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) have filmed several Europeans countries church records but you need to know the name of a town and religious orientation of your ancestor to order the films.

lr_research: Demeter/Metro

Searching for information on Demeter family members who came to America from Terebes between 1906 and 1911. Siblings might include George, John and Stephan. I believe John changed his surname to Metro after arriving in America. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have run the Ellis Island manifests for Janos and Istvan Demeter, thanks to previous help, but once again am at a loss how to proceed. My grandfather told my father he came to the US from Sparta, Romania (?!?!). Thank you.

How about Janos and Istvan DEMETER from Ferebes (Terebes).
www.stevemorse.org Their last residence is T.Terebes and they are Roumanian, going to brother DEMETER Gyorgy in Watterstown, NY.

Yes, that is the manifest suggested as belonging to my grandfather. Is Terebes in the Bucovina area of former Transylvania? I have been told that my grandfather came from the Bucovina area. I have to admit, the more I search the more confused I become. The manifest is interesting in that the brothers named make up my father's name. He was told that he was named for his uncle Stephen. He was also told that his middle name, George, was for another uncle. This appears to fit with the manifest information. Thank you for your assistance, I really appreciate your suggestions and do try to follow your suggestions.

What language was spoken by your DEMETER and OHOTNICKY ancestor?
If what you have is Terebes, Zemplen megye, Hungary on some US documents than this would be Trebisov, Zemplin region, Slovak Republic.
DEMETER does list in Trebisov's phone book.
OHOTNICKY sure seem like a Slavic name. Do you have a place of birth for your OHOTNICKY/ OHOTNICZKY/OCHOTNICKY ancestor?

Az én szépapámnak volt egy nagynénje, Demeter Judit (szül. 1807 körül, Iszló), férjezett Lõrinczi Mihályné. Laktak Iszlón. Családjának kötõdései voltak még Kisillyén, Vadadon. Ha jól tudom ezek mind Nyárádszereda közelében vannak.
Demeter Judit szülei: Demeter Pál és Káli Nagy Borbála. Demeter Pál szülei: Demeter Zsigmond, Fazakas Mária.
Demeter Pál testvérei: Demeter János, Demeter Bálint. Demeter Bálintnak is volt egy Judit nevû leánya, aki 1813-ban született.

Tudom, hogy kb. 1,5 évvel ezelõtti az üzenete, de remélem még olvassa ezt a fórumot.

Keresem a családomat remélem sikerül mielõbb megtalálnom õket. Nagyszüleim Szentesen éltek és apukám testvérei is. Én külön nõttem fel nõvéreimtõl és csak hallomásból tudom hogy vannak. Õket Demeter Évának és Demeter Jolánnak hívják.Kb. 1965 és 1967 körül születtek, lehet hogy Kunszentmártonon mert én is ott születtem 1968-ban. Soha sem találkoztunk ezért keresem õket. Apukám testvéreinek is vannak gyermekeik és sokan viselik a Demeter veezeték nevet így hát nagyon remélem hogy megtalálom õket!Elõre is köszönöm a segítséget! A legjobbakat kívánom az összes Demeternek!

I am also researching this family. I am interested in Istvan, who came with his brother Janos first to Watertown, to stay with his uncle Gyorgy Danaskai. Istvan became Steve and married Teresa, and had about 8 chldren. They lived in Norfolk, St. Lawrence County, NY. Have you learned more about the family and Terebes? According to the ship manifest, their father was Janos, and that's all that I know. I'd like to compare notes and share information with you!
