Julie: Johanna DLABIK from Oszada
Seeking information on my grandmother's family. Johanna DLABIK left Oszada in 1900 and immigrated to the United States. Her sisters Mary and Pauline followed her in the first decade of the 20th century. Johanna married Steven SULEK and settled in New Jersey, while the other two sisters settled in the Pittsburgh area. Mary married John DLABIK (not a typo) and Pauline married John PUCHAK.

Johanna's parents were Joseph Dlabik and Veronica Sahul Dlabik.

Thanks in advance for any information!

The village of Oszada / Osada is now part of town of Trstena, Slovak Republic. http://mapy.atlas.sk for locating a town in SK. Actually the village "sort of" does not exist anymore as there is a man made water reservoir there.
The SK's phone site is at : www.zoznamst.sk but sort of very slow at this moment, not working.
www.iabsi.com/gen/public a must read
www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator (surname navigator)
www.slovakfolkcrafts.com
www.slovaklinks.com
The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records of SK so check out their website for films, which you can order and gather ancestral information. www.bmi.net/jjaso to familiarize yourself with church wording.
Take a look in www.our-slovakia.com in Slovak Pride as surname SULEK and DLABIK was listed there.
I have seen SULEK's post on Ancestry board. Do a search.

Surname DLABIK in Trstena's phone book (same area code as Osada). Might the Puchak be an "americanized" spelling as no listing for that spelling but a PUC'EK, PUC'IK, PUCHEL,and PUC'ET. www.zoznamst.sk
Using One Step/Gray form from Oszada : Puczky, Osada : Pupek. There was a PUCHAK, Mihaly that came thru EI but he was from Valykocz. There is a Janos PUCSAK who was from Oszadnica / Oscadnica, Slovak Republic.

You are not right.Osada does not exist. There is Orava Dam now.The villages Osada,Ustie,Slanica,Lavkov and Hamre are under water.
I know that before 1918 Osada was called Oszada but it was just official name for the government in Budapest because the Hungarian language was the official language of Hungarian Kingdom. There were no Hungarians in Orava, just Slovaks.
Before 1918 that country was called The Hungarian Kingdom but there were just 30% of Hungarians in that kingdom.I told you,we are all Slavics,Slovaks.

treesa.ann: Re: DLABIK from Osada
Hello Lubomirdlabik,

I do not speak Slovak but I am interested in Osada. My great-grandfather was originally from Osada. His name was Frank Krssak and he was of Slovak origin.

On official papers I have a copy of he states that his birth year was 1877 in Osada, Hungary - but my family has always been of Slovak heritage (not Hungarian).

The interesting thing to note is that there is another family in the town where my grandfather grew up in New Jersey USA and they are also originally from the Osada area. Their name is Sivon (not sure if Americanized).

So any details you have on Osada would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,

-Theresa

Hi Julie,

My great-grandfather was from Osada and came to the US in February 1901. He settled in New Jersey also.... There are also people in the same town in NJ who are from Osada.

I have to ask my mom but we do have Sulek's in our family in NJ. I will have to see what the connection is exactly. I do know it's on the side of the family that's originally from Osada....

Theresa--I would be interested in knowing what the connection is. I know one of my cousins married a woman named Lorraine Krissak, which is somewhat close to one of the family names you're researching.

Do you happen to live in either Carteret or Perth Amboy? That's where my mother's family lived before they settled in Trenton.

Thank you, Zlatica for all the great links! Now where do I start.... :)

Part of the problem I face is that Osada is now under a reservoir and I do not know where the Catholic church records would be. From the Latter Day Saints site I saw they had microfilmed many church records but not the Osada I needed (a different Osada).

Best regards,
-Theresa

My Slovak family is from Osada, Slovakia. I am aware that the old village is now underwater. My Great Grandmother Alsbeta left Osada with her husband Jan and their newborn daughter Mariska (my Grandmother) in May 1921. I know they left family behind in Osada and I am looking to connect my tree with any living relatives. I have a few pictures showing many relatives and a letter that seems to be written in Slovak.

Osada WENT by many names just like all the villages and towns before 1918.
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Arva map for Hungarian names of the villages.
http://www.trstena.sk/
The village Ústie nad Priehradou, Oravské Hámre, Osada and Ústie no longer exist because there is man made water reservoir Orava - vodna nadrz Orava.
An ALL site for research in Slovakia www.iabsi.com/gen/public will give you direction for research. It does cover the man made water reservoir Starina in Eastern Slovakia.
