	thetwoees: Relatives My grandfather came from the region around the black forrest in the late 1800 hundreds. I think he was from the late Austria-Hungry and was a tanner by profession. Could he be one of the Essigmanns listed in your directory. Name William Essigmann and married to Elizabeth Puscher probably from the same area. 	thetwoees: Re: Relatives Hi, As far as I know my Grandfather and Grandmother were born in the town of Fogaras, Romana in the area of Transylvania Alps or Sieben Burger which then was part of Austria. Two brothers Wilhelm and Martin came to the USA and Wilhelm went to Erie, Pa, where I grew up, and Martin went to Woburn, Mass and married Syble White and had many boys as I recall, one of which was the Dean of men at Northeastern. Are side of the family seems to be scattered all around, my son is in Atlanta and my daughter lives in Mississippi where we now live, just south of Memphis. 	Kate: Re: Relatives Wow all these sites are awesome, thank you. Martin Essigmann who came over (that you mentioned above) is my great grandfather (or my grandfather?). My father's name was Otto Essigmann and grew up in Woburn Mass. This is pretty much all i know... and ive been bugging my mother for this information... but she just assumed the name Essigmann meant we all came from Germany haha, so she's not sure of anything either. I'd like to figure out if Martin is my great grandfather or my grandfather. I am only 21... so he's probably my great. If yes, you can order his SS-5Form, which should have a place of birth and name of parents. I know that your grandfather (Martin) and my grandfather were brothers and Martin and Sybil (grandmother) had 6 boys; Martin, Lester, John, Otto, Carl and Harold. If I remember right Otto lived in the Chicago area and was very tall. We ran into a couple of Essigmann's in Greenville SC and she said she was married to Otto. It was several years ago and I can't remember her first name. Your grandfather was born in 1891 and had 4 brothers and 4 sisters and their father was Daniel Martin Essigmann born 1846 married to Louise Kemp I have no date for her. I have a lot of dates for the above. I was surprised to learn where the grand parents came from, hope we don't have any vampire blood in us, I just found some of this info about 4 months ago in some papers my mother had. 	leo: Re: Relatives Kate, I know a little about your grandfather, Otto Essigmann. My parents were very good friends with Otto and your grandmother Ann. They had four boys: Little Otto (your father), Tommy, Paul and Peter. My parents are the Godparents of your uncle Tommy. Your grandfather had a very successful construction business and my father always said that he would easily have been a millionaire if he had not died in his forties as the result of a problem during surgery. After his death, Ann and the boys sold the house in Woburn and moved to the house in Seabrook which they already owned. My family the Essigmanns spent many summers together in Seabrook. Before they bought the house we often rented a house together. Can you imagine a house with 7 young boys in it? (The three from my family and the 4 Essigmann boys.) It was something I'll never forget. One last thing, your grandfather flew bombers over Germany in the war. He was a real hero according to my dad, who also served in the war. Good luck. 	Jordan My name is Jordan Essigmann, I live in Tallahassee, Florida for college. My family is originally from the Erie, Pennsylvania area. My grandfather's name is Martin Joseph and he was married to Josephine. Their son Glenn Essigmann is my father, and he married Denise Napierkowski, my mother. I recently took the liberty of signing up for a college subscription to 'The Facebook'. Sort of like an online message board for college students all over the world. Through this I came into contact with three or four other Essigmann's, all pretty much the same age. I found it funny that an entirely new generation of Essigmann's is practically the same age. I really have no purpose writing this, other than to reach out and find relatives that I didnt know I had. I now know, through extensive research, that the Essigmann name is being carried by over 200 living beings. For my own purposes, Im trying to maybe, reconnect with some people that Ive lost contact with. I've enclosed a picture of myself, just in case anyone recognizes me (perhaps I look like someone in the extended family, lol). I'd appreciate any help, and information on any Essigmanns. 	rubyke: Essigmann's My family is from the Erie area also, Martin was my uncle (and my favorite)and my father's brother. My name is Donald and my brother is John, same as my father. Your father and his brother are my cousins but there is a big age difference between us. My grandson, Christopher Essigmann is also in college and is 19 years old, close to your age. We also lived in Florida in Pembroke pines for 25 years and in Port Charlotte for 5 years and moved out just before the hurricane hit last year. I guess just about all the Essigmann's are related somehow except for the ones living in California. I know there are a bunch that live in the northeast in Mass and Maine that I have never met. 	Sarah: searching for info Hi - I just received info today from the church my grandparents were married in. I found that my grnadfather: John Novak was born in 1892 in Fogaras to John and Helen (Bolyos) Novak My grandmother Susan Nagy was born in 1898 to John and Mary (Hugya) Nagy I have gone the Ellis Island route but was unable to find any info. Have you scrutinized the Ellis Island site with One Step/Gray form www.stevemorse.org If not there than your ancestors could have come thru Boston, Baltimore or Philadelphia. A first name translation website, as you know your ancestors would not have been John, Helen, Mary or Susan in "old country". www.fam.aust.com/topolcsany/names The LDS-Mormons website is listing church records of Fogaras but only of the military personnel. Have you posted on Ancestry or Genforum board? There was a town Fogaras in Fogaras megye and now in Romania. 	Nancy Ridley: Re: Essigmann Relatives Hi Don, Dana et al - I am the oldest grandchild (62) of Martin and Sybil. Martin White Essigmann (the oldest of the six brothers) was my father. He was the Dean of Resarch and Chairman and Professor of Electrical Engineering at Northeastern University. As Dana (who wishes he was still 21) knows, the six brothers were quite prolific and we have a lot of first cousins. Thanksgiving at Nana and Grampy's was a command performance and amazing. John, Joyce and I are all in the health and bomedical sciences - John is a Professor at MIT (biochemistry/toxicology) and Joyce teaches medical technology at the University of New Hampshire. John and Joyce have been in touch with our relatives in Fogaras over the past few years, and I am sure they will be adding that information to this blog. A reunion of some type seems like a great idea - we have a lot of relatives in this area so let us know if we can help organize. Josef was a cousin of my father, Martin W. Essigmann (the eldest son of J. Martin Essigmann).Josef's letter gives exact dates for Daniel and Louisa's birth, death and marriage (Daniel was born 8/27/1848, died 2/11/1921 and Louisa born 3/7/1851, died 2/8/1931), and married 11/18/1873 (documented in a Roman Catholic Parish!). My husband and I have been to Me mphis and Tunica several times which I assume must be close to where you are, and I was in Nashville a few weeks ago which seems like it should be about mid-TN. I have also spent a fair amount of time in Biloxi, but that is at the other end of the state. My sister-in-law (Ellen) is the one that posted the old photo of our great-grandparents and my grandfather John Martin as a boy. We do have an email address for the Dushka's in Romania. Often times the children and grandchildren have school projects that necessitate doing a little research on geneaology. I am on my way out the door - the youngest of the 6 Woburn Essigmann sons of John Martin (Harold) died Wednesday and the wake is in Woburn today. Back then any one that spoke German was considered German and Austria-Hungary,Prussia and Russia were the powers in control of most of Europe. The Essigmann's were sent to Hungary to (Along with many others) to try to Germanize the people there which didn't work out to well because they mostly kept to themselfs. Big Otto only had four sons - baby Otto, Tommy, Peter and Paul - my first cousins and all younger than me. When Big Otto died (in his 40s) my Aunt Ann moved to their summer home in Seabrook NH with he 4 boys. I do remember that Baby Otto also died relatively young but if he had lived would have been in his early to mid 50s now. If you and Tony are in your 20s, my educated guess is that you are baby Otto's children, your grandafter was Big Otto (a very successful and well known buider/contractor) and that your great-grandfaher (my grandfather) was J. Martin Essigmann. He never used his real first name (John) - just the initial. He is in the photo that my sister-in-law posted a few months ago. That photo was taken while he still lived in Austria/Romania or whatever it was called back then. We have been constructing a family tree so any information you can share about your families would be appreciated, and we can share what we have with you if you like. I am the son of Lester Essigmann and he was the very tall brother who lived in and around Chicago from the late forties until his death in the early eighties. My mother, Florence, lives in Greenville, SC, and I remember her mentioning being contacted by Wilhelm's descendants. 	Anders: Re: Essigmann Relatives My wife is the great granddaughter of Louise Essigmann, daughter of Daniel and Louisa Essigmann. Louise married Josef Duschka and lived her life in Fogaras in Transsylvania. Their son, also with the name Josef, was my wife's grandfather. I have a question with regard to the photo of Daniel and Louise Essigmann and the three children. Do you happen to know where and when it was taken. According to the Ellis Island records Daniel Essigman and his wife arrived in the U.S. 1910 with two children, Maria, 19 years old, and Martin, 18 years old, so I guess the photo must be from Transylvania somewhere around 1900. 	rubyke: Re: Essigmann Relatives I never knew that Daniel and Louise came over to the states until I looked for my self on the Ellis Island site, I allways assumed they stay over there because no one ever said anything about them when I was small, go figure! I would assune that the picture was taken over there because of the uniform that Martin is wearing it dosen't look like any I recognize, but don't know. The picture came from Martin Essigmann that lives in MASS who went over there. There were Duskas living in Erie,PA is that a shortened version you name? I know they were good friends of our family. 	Lisa Martin: Re: Essigmann Relatives Hello everyone, I am the youngest daughter of Harold Essigmann (John Martin's youngest son). My father passed away last year. As some of you have noted, Uncle Billy is John Martin's only surviving son. There still remains alot of family here in Woburn. I have enjoyed reading all of the entries because I have only had a chance to meet a few of you and I could only remember a few details of the history from being told as a child. It amazes me that our family can be traced back to Transylvania. Also, after looking at the picture, I can see where my youngest son got his looks.. We just got back from Erie, PA attending my class reunion and noticed that no one had responded to your posting. I had been in touch with Nancy Ridley but my hard drive crashed and took all my info with it so I lost contact with that part of the family. My daughter in law called last night and said a Jill Essigmann has contacted her on face book and wondered who she was and if they were related (her name is Jill also), I told her if she was from New England you were related. I knew Harold when he was about 17 and I was 12, we were visiting Uncle Martin and Aunt Sybil a long time ago which is giving away my age. I'm like you, I'm just finding out about a lot of this stuff, I wish I would of asked my father about this before he passed away. I was allways told we were Austrian. 	rubyke: Re: Essigmann Relatives So sorry to hear about Billy, the last of a generation, we will never know the knowledge that went with him and people like my father etc. I never did get back in touch with Nancy, no excuse just getting around to it. I had 2 back surgeries about 4 weeks ago and am just getting around without a walker, what fun. I found out I was allergic to beta dine and swelled up to about 3 times my normal size. On face book two young girls whom I think are family asked to be my friend and being not to smart about face book became a friend with one but I don't know what happened to the other one, I don't want her to think I didn't want to be her friend. 	Lisa Martin: Re: Relatives Hi Tony, I remember when your brother died, I was in Germany at the time I believe 1988. If memory serves me..your Dad passed away not too long after. Nancy is right though, your Dad was "baby or young" Otto, and your grandfather was "Big" Otto. He was my father's brother. His name was Harold, who was the youngest of the six Woburn Essigmann boys. Unfortunetaly, he also passed away a few years ago, and the last living brother Billy passed away last November at the age of 90. I remember your grandmother Ann too and going to Seabrook beach to visit. I was quite young then. My older brother and sister were closer in age and knew your Uncle's Peter, Paul and Tommy better than I. I am not sure if you know the Hamilton's but they were very close to all of them growing up and I happened to have one as a brother in law. He remembers alot of stuff, certainly more than I ever knew.
