kathyrosebud: Farkas family - Horvat Kimle
I'm trying to find any information on my family--father is Joseph Farkas, born 1933 in Horvat Kimle. I know he had 2 sisters and 1 or 2 brothers, (Elizabeth, Teresa, Mark and ?) who all have children as well. I know that I have a cousin named Erika who is around 40 years old. His father's name was John and mother was Julia.

Thanks to anyone who may know any of them!

nadine: FARKAS, GOCZA,, LOCZI
Researching Farkas, Mache or Macke/Makkie, Gocza, Loczi; attached is a picture depicting all the families (Pozsega County, Hungary and near Daruvar, Hungary).

Left: Alexander Farkas Sr. who married Anna Mache in Hungary.
Center: 1904 or 1905 Alexander Farkas Jr. who married Rozália Gócza, and their baby Steve (who died, probably in Hungary, not sure).
Right: Rozalia’s parents, János Gócza who married Katalin Lóczi.

Alexander Farkas Sr. and his wife, Anna (left photo) had three known children: Alexander, Stephan, and Anna (my grandmother); settled South Bend, Indiana.

Alexander Farkas Jr. and his wife Rozalia (center) had more children, Rosa, Margaret, Anna, and Alex (naming a son Alex twice, because the first one died).

Janos Goza and his wife Katalin Loczi (right photo) had the following known children, Istvan, Erzsebet, Anna, and Josef, Maria, and Katalin (also in center photo).

Parents born 1860s, late 1850s, children 1880, late 1870s.

nadine: FARKAS, Rose; FARKAS, Margaret
Researching FARKAS, Alexander (Jr.)
Alexander was born Dec. 15, 1880, in 1904, in Pozsega County, Hungary, he married Rozália Gócza; Rozália was born December 25, 1885 in Pozsega County, Hungary as daughter to János Gócza and Katalin (Lóczi) Gócza.

The attached picture depicts Alexander and Rozália’s two youngest daughters, Rose and Margaret Farkas and an unknown cousin, standing behind them. Rose was born Aug. 25, 1907 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania USA, and Margaret was born Feb. 01, 1909 in Conway, Pennsylvania USA; both cities are in Beaver County. Dates the picture about 1911-1912, so they must have traveled back to Hungary for a visit.

The picture has written on the back, “Aldolf Kluge, Fotograf, Daruvar im Park, Slavonia.” Does anyone know about this photo studio, and what “im Park” might signify?

Thank you very much, Nadine

nadine: FARKAS girls at a Hungarian Dance
Researching FARKAS, Alexander (Jr.)
Alexander was born Dec. 15, 1880, in 1904, in Pozsega County, Hungary, he married Rozália Gócza; Rozália was born December 25, 1885 in Pozsega County, Hungary as daughter to János Gócza and Katalin (Lóczi) Gócza.

The attached picture depicts Alexander and Rozália’s two youngest daughters, Rose (left) and Margaret (right) Farkas; Rose was born Aug. 25, 1907 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania USA, and Margaret was born Feb. 01, 1909 in Conway, Pennsylvania USA; both cities are in Beaver County.

They were dressed for a Hungarian dance that took place at the dance hall near St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Father Biro was pastor at the time. Guessing the photo was taken about in the 1930s, early 1940s.

I attended these Hungarian functions as a child, and remember the women being lifted to the ceiling so they could grab “grapes,” of course violin music was present.

Please contact me if you think you are related to this Farkas family. Thank you, Nadine

Also, I am not sure that is Alexander Farkas on the right, research still pending. Thank you, Nadine

Hi again, I have not been able to find a Farkas - Nemeth connection in our family, but then, I have only been able to find three Farkas descendents that came to the US, Anna, Alex, and Stephen. I suspect there were more to this family, because families were large in the 1880s-1860s, but I have no other definite leads. Thank you for replying.

nadine: FARKAS Alexander
The picture is a painting of Alexander Farkas in his Hungarian Calvary uniform. A picture of Alexander Farkas II in his calvary uniform. He was born December 15, 1880 around Pozsega County, Hungary as son to Alexander Farkas I and Anna Mache/Makki (spelling uncertain).

Alexander Farkas II married Rozália Gócza in 1904 in Pozsega County, Daruvar District, Hungary and came to the US shortly after that time, sending for his wife Rozá in 1906. A grandchild to Alexander and Rose (Goza) Farkas held onto the painting.

It was painted on very thick paper, probably in Hungary. I am researching this Farkas line. If you have any information, please contact me. Thank you, Nadine

Zlatica : Re: FARKAS and RADICS
John

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed.
Was she from the present Hungary or the former Austria-Hungary empire ?
A map of Austria-Hungary empire :
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator
www.google.com
A first name translation website:
www.fam.aust.com/topolcsany/names
Take a look in Ellis Island website.
It can be like looking for a needle in a haystack considering that the surname FARKAS and RADIC' can be found in other countries.

Hi John, if you know very little about your Katherine Radics in Hungary, perhaps you can give some insight to what you know in the US. Unless I see a US connection, I will not reply, but others may see a US connection that may lead you to Hungary more specifically. Most important, is to try to get a document (marriage, birth, etc.) in the US that may have a hint of a Hungary location. It took me years to find the little bit that I did find, and next year I am going to do LDS microfilm. Nadine

my grandmother, Teres Brodian of Arad, Hungary was a very close friend to a man named Farkas. He was the man who started the Alexanders Department Stores in NY and wanted her to be his partner. Her hunband, Abraham Fine, was opposed to the partnership and it never went anywhere. The stores were a huge success. Does any of this sound familiar. That is what my mother told me.

He married Horvath Elizabeth, Tenyo Gyor Hungary. I dont know the date they were married I would say about 1869.
There children:Sandor, Magdolna, Lajos, Jozsef, Angelika,

They lived in Teny Hedgy(mountain). I believe there were other children born before Sandor.

erzsike: Re: Par Farkas
hi there,
ive never heard of par, or farkas being used as christian names, to my knowledge they are both surnames. also, the translation of par farkas would be a couple of wolves, not sure where you got vine grower from!maybe theres some bizarre regional meaning for the two words par=a couple, farkas=wolf, but i sure dont know about it, but thats not saying much!
Par may want to be pal, which can be a christian or surname, and seems more likely.
ive never heard of teny hegy (not hedgy), but i dont know the area, ive only ever been to gyor, and that was only the bus station!!:o)
hope that helps,
take care,

hi Kathleen
we all have bad days, and im sure most of us are researching many, many names by ourselves (i know i am), but its still no excuse to insult a total stranger who was trying to help. however, youve realised that, and i accept your apology. so lets just ignore it,and make like it never happened :o)
im not sure if youre looking for teny or tenyo hegy (not hedgy), as the first post says teny.i had a look at my map for you, i cant find either, and it is a very detailed map. I did however see a tenyo (tényő), which isnt far from gyor, in Győr-Moson-Sopron county. what probably happened after one of the world wars,is that they put a few smaller villages together to make a larger one. that happened with my dads village, where four were put together, so to speak.it seems to have happened quite a bit.
have you looked in the online phonebook?heres the english link

http://www.magyartelekom.hu/english/main.vm

you should also try searching for pár,with the accent, if you havent already. they may well have lost the accent upon moving to the states, and that sounds far more like parr, so its more likely.you should also search the whole county via the phonebook, and gyor itself, as they may not have stayed in the same village all this time.
good luck, and no hard feelings,
erzsike.

The LDS-Mormons website is listing Roman Catholic church records of Torokbalint. You can order the films and gather ancestral information.
Do a www.google.com for Szamek and you should get a lot of sites and same from Hungarian nobility and heraldy.

nadine,
Szt. Gyorgy/Homok szt. Gyorgy/Homokszentgyörgy

Homok=Sand, Szent(szt./Szt.)=Saint, György=George in Hungarian, which is an agglutinative language and as such seemlessly glues them together.

Before 1900, there were over 30 Szentgyörgy in Hungary, and hundreds of Szent...s. After 1900 all were given pre names, although locals are still using Szentgyörgy.

From: Radix - Genealogy research in Hungary, opening page has the search place window. Type in Homokszentgyorgy, it'll show it on the 1913 map of Hungary:
http://www.bogardi.com/gen/

Place Status County (1913) District (1913) Current country
Homokszentgyörgy kisközség=(village) Somogy Barcsi Hungary
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Bolho kt. Barcz zup. Somogy, Hungary
Bolho see below, kt./kot. most likely kk.=kis község=small village, Barcz zup(a)=Barcs járás=district, Somogy Megye=County

From the same Radix place search:
Place Status County (1913) District (1913) Current country
Bolhó kisközség=(village) Somogy Barcsi Hungary
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

evangelic reformator church=Evangelic Reformed Church(Calvinist) Parishioners from Trojeglava (today in Croatia) went to Brekinjska. Records at Mormons LDS/FHLC:

Title Matična knjiga, 1868-1900
Authors Evangelička crkva. Župa Brekinjska (Main Author)

Notes Metrical books (births, marriages, deaths) for Evangelical Reformed congregation at Brezinszka, Slavonien, Austria; later Brekinjska, Pozsega, Hungary; now Brekinjska, Croatia. Text in Serbo-Croatian.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Trojeglavski majur = most likely Téglavár puszta/pusta/p., next to Trojeglava, belonged to Trojeglava tax district with Dezanovac district town.
NOTE:
majur/major is a name for a small rural settlement, also can be called puszta/pusta/p., not shown on most maps.

There is a highly detailed 1910 military map of Ausria-Hungary where is shown as Teglavar pst.
I attached the map, look for it in the bottom, little bit to the left from the middle.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Petersalas = most likely Péterszállás puszta(see NOTE above) , belonged to Nagyláng, Fejér County. I have Magyar ancestors from the same area, but didn't reseached yet.

Hope this helps, let me know if have any question.
Joseph Laszlo

nadine,
I double checked Petersalas, it's not Peterszallas puszta in Fejer County, it's indeed Petersalas puszta in the same Daruvar District of Pozsega County, Croatia as Trojeglava and Teglavar puszta. Jurisdictionwise belonged to Krestelovac, on the map I see a Peter east from Trojeglava, Krestelovac is north from Peter.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

In one of your earlier post, you have one more place name Babocsa. It's in the same Barcsi District of Somogy County, Hungary, as Homokszentgyorgy and Bolho. Actually R.Cath. parishioners from Bolho went to church in Babocsa. Also, starting after 1895, Babocsa was the Civil Records district town.

Homokszentgyorgy Civil records, starting after 1895, are with Kalmancsa.

Kedves Joseph, I just wish to thank you again for the tremendous help you have given me. I will be forever grateful to you and all the other kind researhers/scholars that extend a helping hand. In my case, you pieced together threads of information and made all the facts come together with the beautiful map.

I have only one quest left, to find the true Hungarian spelling of Matzki, my great-grandmother. And that may be revealed with the microfilm.

I am on the board of directors for a small Magyar group that meets in Orlando, Florida. I like to keep my beautiful Hungarian heritage alive.

Nagyon szivesen, Nadine!
I'm sure you know, that Hungary was a big melting pot country, not unlike the US. Lot's of names are not Hungarian origine like Matzki, which of course doesn't mean that the bearer are not Hungarians, or vice versa. Spelling variances are common, but I don't think it'll give you true Hungarian spelling or meaning. To me sounds like germanized slavik, other spellings at RadixIndex/Surname index: Matzky Maczki, Maczky: http://www.radixindex.com/surnameindex/surnameindex_ma.shtml

Talking about different languages. I want to mention one more thing about Teglavar pst., as shown on the map in Croatia, which I believe is the same place as Trojeglavski majur.
Trojeglava was a fortress town, Teglavar pst.= Téglavár puszta(H)= Brickfortress prarie, with other words, the agricultural area of the fortress.
Isten Veled! (with e) = God be with you!

Dear Nadine,
I've just noticed that all three places, Babócsa, Bolhó and Homokszentgyörgy are also on the map I gave you.
Set the Horiz. slide at the middle, with the Vert. slide look for the big river Drau(Dráva) at below the middle of the map, Babócsa and Bolhó are next to each other just north from the river, Homokszentgyörgy is about 2 o'clock direction from them.
Üdvözlettel,

nadine: Re: MATZKI-FARKAS
Kedves Joseph, I just found another family member born to Alexander (Sandor) Farkas and Anna (Matzki) Farkas – Katy!

On Apr 23, 1904 died Katica Farkas, 8 years old, born in Gaj, daughter of Sandor and Ana Farkas ( wagon-maker), now they live in Trojeglavski majur.

What is exciting about this find is that my sister remembers our grandmother mentioning her sister, Katy who died. So now this makes four children born to Sandor and Anna (Matzki) Farkas: Anna (my grandmother), Istvan (Stephan), Sandor (Alexander), and Katalin (or Kata – Katica).

Another strong possibility (because of the location) is another son, called Jurai, who had a daughter called Anna that died.
In Jul 8 , 1916 died Ana, daughter of Juraj Farkas and Terezija Vegh (Ana was born on Jul 4, 1916). They lived in Trojeglava.

Jurai- from what I could find the given name translates to George (in Croatia), and George translates to Gyorgy in Hungary.

Gaj - the RC film records (Hungary) go as far back as 1717! Gaj is 1.4 miles NE of Brekinska.

Metrical books (births, marriages, deaths) for the Roman Catholic congregation at Gaj, Pozsega, Hungaryp; now Gaj (Pakrac), Croatia. Text in Latin and Serbo-Croatian.

The map you directed me to is beautiful, but I do not know how to download it to my computer (it is too large). But I keep going back to it to find all the locations with much success.

I am stumped by "Barcsi" that you mention. I know Barc, but the "si" confuses me. Forgive me for being such a detailed person. Again. Thank you for all your help. Nadine

Dear Nadine,
You're welcome, anytime.

To download the map, right click on the map, than chose Save Image As... from the Rolldown menu, it sholdn't be a problem.

I saved an other map here, Pozsega County. Gaj is SW from Brekinska.

(Bar)cs is a separate letter in the Hung. alphabet, sounds like (coa)ch, the Croat. eq. is (Bar)c with a small inverted roof over it.

The letter (Barcs)i-járás=(district), is a Hung. possesive suffix, meaning district of Barcs.

You may have noticed, that lot's of Hung. surnames ends with i or y, usually after place names. They're the same possesive suffixes. For example, Barcsi as a surname could mean, that person is from or belongs to that place, or if he was a noble man. he was given or owned that particular village at one time. Surnames started in the 15th century, noble names earlier.

I hope it'll help.
Joseph

Kedves mindenki!

Nekem a dédnagymamámat hívták Farkas Erzsébetnek. Több testvére illetve féltestvére is volt: Gábor, Anna, Mária (az ő vezetékneve Rácz, csak mostohatesvére volt), Etelka. Nincs nálam a jegyzetfüzetem, most csak ennyi jut eszembe. Ha sikerült valami információt találnia többet tudok segíteni, elég sok Farkas rokonom van. Üdvözlettel: Horváth Éva
