JFELZAN: Searching for Felcsan/Felzan relatives
My grandfather and grandmother were ethnic Slovaks who emigrated to the United States from Hungary.

From Ellis Island records I have learned that my grandfather arrived in America on April 13, 2000 at the age of 25. He is listed on the ship manifest as Janos Felczan. He later used the name Jan Felcan and later still used the spelling Felzan.

My grandmother's maiden name was Berta Gerka. She came to America to marry my grandfather, arriving on March 17, 1905. She was 26 years old.

I believe that my grandparents were from Tot Prona even though their Ellis Island records just show Hungary as the last place of residence for my grandfather and show Germany as the last place of residence for my grandmother. I make the assumption about Tot Prona because there were three males named Felcsan who arrived on the same ship as my grandmother. They are listed as all from Tot Prona. I believe that two of these individuals were my grandfather's older brothers (I know that he was the youngest of a number of siblings), and the third male would appear from his age (16)to be one of the other's son.

There are a number of other individuals with the name Felcsan who arrive at various time. They are virtually all from Tot Prona.

My father wrote in a letter once that he thought his father's family (i.e., my great grandfather) had some prominence in local politics.

My grandfather belonged to a Slovak Luthern church in Chicago, so I assume this was the religion that he was brought up in.

Any information would be most interesting and appreciated.

Jill Felzan

You meant 1900. On the manifest, the Last residence doesn't look like Tot Prona, maybe Hrab....falu. I can or you too look for it on these maps of Turocz County for something close to Tot-Prona, it looks like ends with falu=(village), a common Hung. place name ending:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/gonczy/turoc.htm

Tót-Próna/Slovenske-Pravno/Windisch-Proben had R.Cath. and Evang. churches.
LDS/FHLC FamilySearch.org - Family History Library Catalog
has the records. At Place Search type in prona, than chose Tóth-Próna:

Check out www.our-slovakia.com Slovak Pride. A surname FELCAN is listed as being from Slovenske Pravno by a descendant Cates. You can get in touch with the descendant thru Ms. Helene.
Also take a look in http://genforum.com Slovak Republic. There you will find some information on Matilda FELCZAN.
You know anyone named Aubrey? She posted on this board in 2003 with the surname FELCAN. She did not come back on the board to pick up the information that I posted.

Jill,
It's Abrahamfalu in the manifest. On the first, 1900 map it's the first village north on the road from Tót-Próna. On the second, 1910 map its called Turóczábrahámfalva.
Abrahamfalu/Abrahamova, church records are NOT with Tóth-Prona, but Szent-György for R.Cath. and Ivankafalu for Evang.

Their 1911 Shipping Manifest shows Janos place of birth Abrahamfalu, Bertas Beszterczebanya=Banska Bystrica.
Nearest relative in Abrahamfalu, Turocz m(egye)=county, his mother Zuzanna Vajda.

JFELZAN: Re: Searching for Felcsan/Felzan relatives
Joseph,

I have looked closely at the original manifest from my grandfather's entry in 1900. It looked to me like he might have been traveling with the person listed below, also from Abrahamfalu (if I am interpreting those marks correctly). She is indicated as a widow. Is it possible to make out what it says under relatives they were going to join?

Thank you so much.

I'm glad you're looking the Manifest. Judging from the different handwriting, looks like they added the note later. I would guess br.law Michael Vern, or Verza, Verra. How do you reading it?
