| JFELZAN: Searching for Felcsan/Felzan relatives | My grandfather and grandmother were ethnic Slovaks who emigrated to the United States from Hungary.
From Ellis Island records I have learned that my grandfather arrived in America on April 13, 2000 at the age of 25. He is listed on the ship manifest as Janos Felczan. He later used the name Jan Felcan and later still used the spelling Felzan.
My grandmother's maiden name was Berta Gerka. She came to America to marry my grandfather, arriving on March 17, 1905. She was 26 years old.
I believe that my grandparents were from Tot Prona even though their Ellis Island records just show Hungary as the last place of residence for my grandfather and show Germany as the last place of residence for my grandmother. I make the assumption about Tot Prona because there were three males named Felcsan who arrived on the same ship as my grandmother. They are listed as all from Tot Prona. I believe that two of these individuals were my grandfather's older brothers (I know that he was the youngest of a number of siblings), and the third male would appear from his age (16)to be one of the other's son.
There are a number of other individuals with the name Felcsan who arrive at various time. They are virtually all from Tot Prona.
My father wrote in a letter once that he thought his father's family (i.e., my great grandfather) had some prominence in local politics.
My grandfather belonged to a Slovak Luthern church in Chicago, so I assume this was the religion that he was brought up in.
Any information would be most interesting and appreciated.
Jill Felzan
