Tom: Re: looking for family
Dear Raymond,

I'm Tom Fogolyan from Hungary. I saw Your Forum, when I surfed on the Net. Me and my family also look for our family. In Romania there is another Fogolyan, but we didn't know him. Our grandfather came to Hungary from Transilvania, before the World War II.

In Hungary Fogolyans live in Hajdúböszörmény (4 persons), in Budapest (3 persons).

Please write me soon, 'cause we'd like to know more for our family.

Are You contact with any Fogolyan?

With hope

Tom Fogolyan and my family

Gajzago: Re: looking for family
I am interested in the history of the Gajzago name. My understanding is that the Gajzago's moved to Transylvania around the late 17th - early 18th Century. The theory is that they moved from Armenia across the Black Sea. However this is not an Armenian name and I suspect it may be Jewish in origin.from my reading there seemed to be a mass immigration into Transylvania around this period. My father Gajzago Elemer never found out the exact truth. Why was there a mass migration from Armenia around this period?

Pallas Nagy Lexikona egy adatot ad:

Gajzágó Salamon, az állami számvevőszék legelső elnöke, szül. Túrpásztón (Jász-Nagy-Kun-Szolnok vármegye) 1830 febr. 2. Tanult Szamosujvártt, Pesten, a jogot Pozsonyban. 1861.

Kali Kinga: Re: looking for family
Dear Raymond!

I am not a Fogolyán, but I am of Armenian origin too, and in our family tree (Szenkovits) there are some Fogolyáns by marriage.

I was in contact mostly with Fogolyán Miklós Pater Lucas, who is the great uncle of my mother, and who helped me a lot to write my MA thesis about the Transylvanian Armenian identity. He was a mechitarist priest, and lived in San Lazzarro of Venice as well. I think him and Fogolyán András Vilmos were very close relatives, but I don't exactly know of which degree (maybe brothers?).

Unfortunatelly Fogolyán Miklós died few years ago. His sister Fogolyán Rózsa lives in Budapest, but I haven't seen her for a long time at the Armenian gatherings, she might be forceless, because she is very old.

I think this is your family!

There is a part of the Fogolyán family in Kolozsvár, Transylvania, but I don't know them, only Miklós told me about them. We have spent a lot of time together when he was in mission in Gyergyószentmiklós, Transylvania - the town where initially all the arriving Armenian families were settled down by Apafi Mihály in 1672. But I think you know the story.

I've made a documentary about the Armenians of Gyergyószentmiklós, now I try to gather some money in order to subtitle it in English, to be able to screen "all around the world" where there is any interest of seeing it, in the Armenian diaspora. I live in Budapest, and I am writing my PhD about Transylvanian Armenian identity.

I hope I'm hearing you soon,

Kinga Kali

Kali Kinga: Re: looking for family
Dear Gajzágó!

As I know there was no mass migration to Transylvania in the named period, but much before: the Armenians arrived before 1672, because the low by Apafi Mihály which is giving them trading rights in Transylvania is of this date. I don't know particulary about Gajzágó family when exactly they arrived, but I think around that time. If you are still interested I might do some reserch in Budapest, later on, because now I am abroad - and I don't want to say something wrong.

Don't be tricked by the name, because the Armenians have left Ani, the old capital around 1239, so when they've arrived to Transylvania they haven't had "real" Armenian names anymore, but more phonetically simplified names, or nicknames picked up in the foreign environments - in Crimea, in Moldova. As far as I know (up to the Armenian genealogy of Szongoth) Gajzágó means The Lame Isaak (Gaj/Sako), and obviously is a nickname.

Please, let me know if you are interested anymore, and I will see what I can do. (And I have some Gajzágó friends in Transylvania and Budapest as well.)

Best regards,
Kinga Kali

Rako: Re: looking for family
Erről fényképet is mellékelünk.
http://www.asz.gov.hu/C1256D89002F54FF/0/DF1DF499E1907D2FC1256F49002EA1B3?opendocument
Azonkívűl az ASz kiválő munkatársainak "Elnöki Elismerő oklevelet (Gajzágó Salamon díjat) adományoz".
