Susan: Garaj/Garai/Garay family
Maria Garaj (Mary Garay in U.S.) was my great grandmother. She was born 25 Jun 1876 and died in 1941. She came to Elyria, Lorain Co., Ohio after 1902 and before 1904 to join her husband, Andras Moczni, with their children, Istvan (my grandfather, Steven Mocsny), Gizela, and Gyorgy (George). They lived all their lives in Elyria and had five more children there.
She had the following siblings according to the Szinobanya Evangelical Church Baptism records (LDS microfilm 2011173, Cirkevna matrika 1769-1949): Janos, Mihaly, Zsuzsanna, Gyorgy, Ilona, Paulinka, all born between 1870 and 1886.
Her parents were Janos Garaj and Maria Korim, according to the same records.

Any connections?

ellie: Re: GARA - Garaj / Garai / Garay family

My great-grand-mother -- GARA, ERZSE'BET was from Beregszász (Berehove, Ukraine just East of a Tisza river bend)

Her daughter (my father's mother) was born 7 May 1887, IGNÁTKO, ERZSÉBET (lakhely) Mándok 24 (Szabolcs) - west of the Ukraine border (Czechoslovakia) and was baptized R.Catholic - on 11 May 1887 - by Hajdurov Jovan, Kaplan

G-G-ma's husband -- Ruthenian? Ukrainian? IGNÁTKO, JÁNOS was an ‘artisan’ (iparus)

G-ma may have been the eldest child of her parents (per Roman Catholic baptismal record #36, A 864, pg. 46) - and - may have had one brother - name unknown (per her death record)

According to church record (for G-ma): god parents REHA, JANOS BLAR /BLAS, CAROLINA Ra’thy Koilviamus

G-G-ma G-G-pa spoke Hungarian at home (per 1930 US Federal Census)

Magyarized on the ship manifest as ERZSA IGNACZ, Hungarian, g-ma may have arrived at Ellis Island, New York City <1902-1904>

What I have learned, so far, you may read on my web site http://www.Kositch.US

Thank you for any information which you may choose to share . . .
