edmm: Gelberman family
My great-grandfather was Nathan Gelberman (born around 1878). I believe that he was from Hungary and came to Tennessee, U.S. in the early 1900s. He married Florence Abrams (Abrahams) and had one son - Roy Harold (born July 7, 1903). His parents were Aryeh Gelberman and Lottie Green (?). If these names ring a bell, please let me know.

Debbie

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research.

Some websites to help in the search :
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
www.genealogienetz.de/reg/ESE/dsinfo.htm
www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator
http://vivisimo.com
www.imrehun.com
www.pikpuk.com
www.munky.com

Hungary's phone site is at :
www.matav.hu/tudakozo

2 GELBERMANs passed thru Ellis Island to America. You might want to take a look at those manifests.

Do post on German board and Jewish board if applicable.

RichardBrenin: Re: Gelberman family
Hi, my maternal line is also Gelberman. Franz Gelberman, my great great grandfather, immigrated from Hungary to the southern US as well. In fact my grandfather was raised in Mobile, AL. I have gone only as far back as the census where Franz was listed as a "street hawker". I would love to know if any of the other Gelbermans in the US (like when you do a Google) are from the same Hungarian family. Please include me in your research! Maybe we could organize a trip to Hungary some day to look at old Jewish graveyards if they still exist.

Dear Debbie,

I hope the third time's the charm. We have a match, not my family, but the family of one of my oldest friends, Joyce Goldstein, whose son I promised a family tree for his bar mitzvah. I'm in regular touch with Joyce's mother Rita, nee Blau. Her paternal grandmother was born Yedis Gelberman, daughter of Aryeh. Yedis married Elias Blau in Vitka in 1881. Yedis came from Tarpa, ten miles east of Vitka. Please write back. We're eager to make a shiddach.

Not family, just helping as a hobby.
Census records of 1867 didn't mention Temple in Vitka (Szatmár County), the 1877 Gazetteer of Hungary does with 270 members, than the 1890 Census shows Izraelites went Temple in Mátészalka. It needs to be checked out.
Also, the International Jewish Cemetery Project - Hungary doesn't show Vitka: http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/e-europe/hung-m-z.html

LDS (Mormons) Family Search - Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) has Vitka Jewish records on microfilms, it can be researched in your nearest FHL:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

Registers of Jewish births, marriages and deaths for Vitka.
Note
Születtek, házasultak, halottak 1862-1885
Location Film
FHL INTL Film 642921 Item 9

Tarpa a.k.a. Mezőtarpa (Bereg County) Jewish residents went to Temple in Beregszász, which is in Ukraine today and as such it's vital records are not readily available.

I hope this helps,
Joseph

Moti BLAU: Re: Gelberman family
Dear Joe,

I have found your posting hear and wanted to ask - do you have any information about Elias Blau from Vitka ? My grandfather Lajos BLAU was born in Vitka and I was looking to find out if there is any relation.

Many kind regards,
