phgerlei: Re: Gerlei találkozó
Hi,

I´m a Gerlei too but don´t know if we are parents!

Due to the high level of Gerlei people in the telephone book, I assume we are!

One question: what is our level in the nobless because I heard we have some blue connection

Thanks for a reply

Hi Gerlei,
Your blue connetzion would be possible if your name have been written by Y...Gerley. With i....the blue connection is not possible... it is sure in 96%

Hi,
ok...:)i thought you know about the difference...and you are right....Gerlei with ,,simple,, i could mean connection with family ,,Blue,,....but somewhere the farmers and sevants have been called...example john Gerlei...because he worked on the fields of the rich Gerley.:) it was just an example...and i think you know about this, too. And othewise...it could be an ,,adopt,, name, too....like mine.:) so, i am sorry but i am not part of Gerley's familytree.:)
But i nice to meet you.

Hi fellow Gerleis and all Interested!

a few remarks about our name
"..Gerlei with ,,simple,, i could mean connection with family ,,Blue,,....but somewhere the farmers and sevants have been called...example john Gerlei...because he worked on the fields of the rich Gerley.:)"

Unfortunately you are not right. In Hungarian the 'i' at the end of a name means from. In this case Gerlei means a person from Gerle village. (there was a village called Gerlefalva in Hungary, now it belongs to Slovakia anc called Girovce)

In Hugary it was not a custom to take the name of the feudal lords, who practically owned their bondages. In Hungary the feudal bondage was abolished in 1862. Also in the old Hungarian they used Y and I in writing with the same pronunciation.

From late 19th century many people tried to show noblility so at that time many changed their name ot it's spelling. eg. from I to Y.

The word gerle is a name of a bird (similar to pigeon) ant it is used in the everyday language.

I am thinking about to organize a Gerlei meeting, it is not a very common name, is would be nice to know other Gerleis..

Take care,

Gerlei

Hi Gerlei:)
I live in Hungary.. near Veszprém and there are some Gerlei in Várpalota, too. I dont think you have right with the name of bird and the i...:)Hungarian language never conjugates in this way.. the but never mind it.:) And you shouldn't expline me about the pronunciation. I am hungarian for a long time.:) Ok...I just played you up. You are a very clever. you know much about this thing...Very much and you dont live here...it is honourable.

Hi Gerlei names,

the goal of this board is not to fight against the other , but to find where this name is coming from.

When somebody try to find his ancestral , even if he live in the country or not, it is legitim!

I don´t live in Hungary, I would like!

As I was 6 years old, I went the first time in Hungary in 1968 for 3 months (mai-jul)

do you remember the russian guys on the highway?

I remember, so please a little bit compassion

Awaiting to read something from a gerlei, what w/o i a bird is, we need to accept it, that´s it! The history cannot be changed but analysed and understood

ggerlei: Another Gerlei
Hi,

I'm another Gerlei from Hungary living in Budapest. To add one more turn to the i/y question, I happen to know that my great-grandfather had his name with y but my grandfather used it with the i. In the troubled 20th century in Hungary sometimes it was an advantage, somtimes a disadvantage to have a y at the end of your name (sounds weird, isn't it) so some people decided to switch. It could just as well be the case that the great-grandfather of my great-grandfather had his name with an i.

Attila: Gerlei from Uruguay
My grandparents moved from Hungary to Uruguay after the 56's uprising. My grandpa's last names were Gerlei Szabo, but I found out his original last name was Grib instead of Gerlei, it was changed at the end of the 1800's early 1900's. He was born in Kispest, and his father in Felsobanya. I'm trying to get in touch with any family I might have in Hungary or anywhere else. I know for sure there are some relatives in Australia, but lost contact. Thank you
