| Miles Lambert: Go'cs csala'd | Leveleztem Go'cs Tama'ssal, aki Sa'toraljau'jhelyen e'l. Ta'voli rokonsa'ga van a nagyapa'mmal, Go'cs Istva'nnal (1884-ban szul.) Tova'bba', olvastam egy ko"nyvet az egyik U'jhely melletti falu'ro'l, Also'regmecro"l. Az u'j informacio alapja'n, lehet mondani hogy ez a Go'cs csala'd valo'szinu"leg a 17-ik sza'zad ma'sodik fele'to"l lakott az Abau'ji (ke'so"bb Zemple'ni) Hegyko"zben. Go'csok voltak Also'regmecen legala'abb 1770 o'ta. Go'cs Tama's nagyapja szerint, valaha a Go'cs csala'dnak volt kisnemes rangja. Te'nyleg, volt egy nemes Go'cs Istva'n Abau'jban 1754-ben, leheto"leg Also'regmecen hiszen a falu akkoriban Abau'jhoz tartozott (csak a 19-ik sza'zad ma'sodik fele'ben csatlakozott Zemple'nhez). Minden nemzede'kben volt egy Istva'n-nevu" Go'cs fe'rfi, mind a nagyapa'mig (la'tszo'lag, o" volt a legutolso' Go'cs Istva'n). A ne'v alapja'n, so"t a kisnemesse'g miatt, azt hiszem hogy ez a csala'd o"se a sze'kely ko"lpe'nyi Go'cs Istva'n volt, akit Ra'ko'czi emelte nemesi rangra 1655-ben. Ezek a Go'csok reforma'tusok voltak. De az utolso' reforma'tus Go'cs Istva'n 1800-ban szuletett (Also'regmecen), e's a Sa'rospataki ref. kolle'gia zene'szek ja'tszodtak a temete'se'n kb. 1870-80 ban. Go'cs Istva'n uta'n, mind az Also'regmeci Go'csok gorog katholikusok voltak (az e'n nagyapa'm viszont, ro'mai katholikus volt).
Ha't, szerintem, az a ko"lpe'nyi Go'cs Istva'n reforma'tus volt (a mai Culpiu/Kolpeny me'g ma is tulnyomo'an reforma'tus) e's letelepedett Abau'jban a Ra'ko'czi kapcsolata miatt, vagy Also'regmecen, vagy egy kozeli faluban. A Go'csok valo'szinu"leg eltavolodtak 1711 uta'n a Ra'ko'czi szabadsa'g harc buka'sa uta'n, amikor majdnem elne'ptelenedett az Abau'ji (Zemple'ni) Hegykoz. De visszajottek az u'jrane'pesule's ideje'ben, ma'r 1750 elo"tt. Go'cs Tama's szerint, a Go'cs csala'd volt kapcsolata a helybeli nemes Kazinczy csala'ddal, e's a Kazinczy csala'd visszahivta'k a Go'csokat. Ugy la'tszik, hogy 1711 e's 1750 kozott, a Go'csok valahol Eperjes vide'ke'n laktak.
I corresponded with Thomas Go'cs, who lives in Satoraljaujhely (on the Slovakian border in northeast Hungary). He is a distant relation of my grandfather (Stephan Go'cs, born 1884). Further, I have read a book about Alsoregmec, one of the villages near Satoraljaujhely. On the basis of the new information, it can be said that the Go'cs family probably lived in the Abauj County region of Hegykoz (an area later to be incorporated into Zemplen County). There were Go'cs-es in Alsoregmec since at least 1770. According to Thomas Go'cs's grandfather, the Go'cs-es once had the rank of common ('small') nobility. In fact, there was a nobleman by the name of Stephan Go'cs recorded in Abauj County in 1754, very possibly in Alsoregmec since the village still belonged to Abauj at that time (it was only shifted into Zemplen County in the second half of the 19th century). In each generation there was a man named 'Stephan Go'cs', all the way down to my grandfather (who seems to have been the last 'Stephan Go'cs). On the basis of this name, as well as because of the noble rank, I believe this Go'cs family's ancester was the Szekely 'Stephan Go'cs' of Ko"lpe'ny, whom Rakoczi raised to noble rank in 1655. These Go'cs-es were of the Reformed church. But the last Reformed Stephan Go'cs was born in 1800 (in Alsoregmec), and the brass band of the Reformed College in Sarospatak played at his funeral around 1870-1880. But already in the 18th century the Go'cs-es increasingly became Catholics, either Roman or Greek, depending on where they lived and with whom they married. For instance, after the Stephan Go'cs who was born in 1800, all of the Go'cs-es in Alsoregmec have been Greek Catholic (my grandfather, on the other hand, was Roman Catholic).
Well, I believe that the Stephan Go'cs from Kolpeny was of the Reformed religion (the population of Kolpeny/Culpiu is largely Reformed even today) and settled down in Abauj on account of his connection to Rakoczi, whether in Alsoregmec or a nearby village. The Go'cs-es likely moved away after 1711, after the failure of the Rakoczi wars (against the Habsburgs), when the Hegykoz region was virtually depopulated. But they must have come back during the repopulation of the region, already before 1750.
According to Thomas Go'cs, the Go'cs family had a connection (but not genealogically) with the important noble Kazinczy family, and it was the Kazinczys who brought the Go'cs-es back to the region. Apparently the Go'cs-es had moved northward towards Eperjes (now Presov) after 1711 and stayed there until going back to Hegykoz.
