These occupations are given for my ancestors near Waldenburg, Sachsen, in the early to mid 1800s. I know they translate into horse farmer and hand farmer, however I wonder what would be a better description of these occupations. Would a Pferdebauer have farmed land using a horse, or would he have raised horses for a living? I assume then that a Handbauer farmed the land by hand, without benefit of machines or horses. Any help in understanding these occupations?

Hi Howard,
its simple - a Pferdebauer was wealthy enough to hold one or more horses and - usual - he had enough land to "need" this horse(s) and - often - a voice in the villages "politics". A Handbauer - hadn't.
