My name would be Maria Hawlish, only my father "Hungarianized" his name after the Second World War. I was born in Budapest and I live in Canada now.

I would also like to know more about the origin of the name.

I recognized a name Mahren which stands for historical region Moravia.

A good locator of town whose name is from the old regime is :
www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm (mapquest) and it is locating a Trebitsch as being Trebic, Czech Republic.

A listing for HAVLIS in Trebic's phone book. This could be the Czech spelling of a German name Hawlisch. The Czech alphabet does not have a W.

I had a college guy, Chris Hawlisch, working for me here in Texas, USA whose father was from Austria. Much of his family moved to Switzerland after WWII.
