Ilona: last name

This is my last name and I barely know anything about it. I know my fathers name was Lajos Hoffstaedter.. and I've tried to research my last name usually to no avail. I have only found two of his school records. I have no idea what my last name means or if there are any family left in hungary. My dad passed away before I was born and I'm not that close to my half-brother and half-sister who knew him well.

Your last name is one that has been spelled a variety of ways over the years. If you look at the surnames index on this forum you'll notice many. But to further your search, it is vital to discover the place where your father was born and raised. The school records you mention can be a good place to start. They can perhaps tell you what school he attended and/or where it was located. Otherwise You may look for immigration or naturalization records. I haven't been able to find those school records again sadly. I don't remember how I found them either.

I have a picture of his grave, and it has the name Zekany Tivadar on it, which I think was my grandfather. Above his name and Zekany is Zekany Tivadarne, who I believe was my grandmother. My father was born in 1939, and emigrated to America, and passed away in 1984.

If anyone can give me any information on this, I would really appreciate it!
