Kathleen Parr: Imri

I am researching the name Bodnar,Imri,Erzsébet. born around the early 1800's, rudabanya or edeleny. I was told by someone that the surname[IMRI/IMRE] was a common name so many people changed their last name to Budai/Miszlai/Radai.
Can someone help me on this, and explain it in english if possible. Thank you.
