Goobygirl

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research.
www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator
www.google.com
Hungary's phone site is listing ISKI.
www.matav.hu/english/index.html
About 80 ISKIs passed thru Ellis Island. You might want to take a look at the manifests.
The Slovak Republic's phone book is listing some ISKI and IS'KI. www.zoznamst.sk

My family were in Budapest from what I know. I believe my great grandfather, George Iski, immigrated to the US from there. They eventually settled in Michigan. George married Esther Barraty (from PA) and they had George, John, Joe, Betty, Esther, and Frank, my grandfather.

Gail: ISKI
My grandfather Frank Iski from Gavavencsello (born 1896) was the youngest of 5 children. He lived in West Virginia, Ohio and settled in Detroit. He came to America in 1912 with his brother Andrew (born 1894). Andrew married Irene Kertas and settled in McKeesport PA. Another brother Gabor (born 1892) lived in WV and OH. Sister Borballa (born 1887) married Joseph Kayuha settled in Triadelphis WV. The oldest was Karoly (born 1882). He came through Ellis Island April 12, 1911. I do not think Karoly stayed in America. I was told he returned to Hungary and raised his family in Sarospatak.

Hi - I'm the daughter of Frank Jr. who is the Son of Frank Sr.
Esther and George are my Great Grandparents too. I'm Tina. You've got the family correct. I "think" I've found that George Iski came to US through Ellis Island in 1907 at age 17. He was born in 1890. Look on the ellisisland.org and just look for Iski, as the first name of the ship manifest was torn off.
I assume you are the son/daughter of Dennis or Donna :) Probably Wendy huh?
Drop me a line.

Gail: Re: ISKI
To Lisa Hull: You and I are distant cousins. My grandfather was Frank Iski, brother of Andrew Iski your great grandfather. The two of them came to America together in 1912. I found their entry on the Ellis Island website misspelled under Jski. Andrew is in the photo above which I posted 13/08/2005. Gabor is on the left, Andrew in the middle, and Frank on the right. Their sister Bertha is seated in front of them. The photo was taken about 1920. I went to Hungary last year and visited some of the family who still live in Gavavencsello. I don't have any information about Andrew and Irene's family and have been hopeing someone searching on the internet might find my listing. Please get in touch with me.

Hi Gail,
Both my father's and grandfather's name was John - quite unique :-)? I know nothing about my grandfather, but my father was born in '09 in Bodrogolaszi, Hungary. I found on the Ellis Island site, that my grandfather was out in Scranton, PA in 1910, to work at the steel mills. He went back in 1912. My father was a POW in Germany until the American liberation in '45. He never came back to Hungary but came to the US. He went to Pennsylvania I guess to the relatives my grandfather visited. He then settled in Chicago. I came out in 1956 after the revolt was crushed by the Russians. What part of the country do you live in?

My father Charles Kayuha grew up in Triadelphia with his 3 brothers and one sister. I have three Kayuha brothers and one sister with many grandchildren and great grandchildren now. We would be interested in information you have on the Iski side of our family. Bob Kayuha

My Gosh! How terrific that we have made contact. You and I are second cousins. Yes, that is your grandmother Borballa in the photo. Through Lisa Hull I have made contact with Andrew's family as well. They corrected my identification of Andrew in the photo above as the one on the left, Gabor in the middle and my grandfather Frank on the right. Please email me at home.

rkayuha: Re: ISKI
I am Bob's brother Ross. Josef Kayuha and Borbala Isik were my grandparents. I visited Gavavencsello where Borballa was from and Kenezlo where Josef was from back in 1991. I found a middle-aged woman in Kenezlo who's maiden name was Kayuha(I don't have her married name). Her father had just died within the past six months. I took pictures but they were taked away by the Soviets at a border later that week. I also visited a family with the surname "Iski" in Gavavencsello. However, they had no memory of my grandmother or her brothers Andy and Frank.

My father had many funny stories of his Uncle Gabor, and I believe his Uncle Andy and his mother Borballa were twins.

Borbala arrived in the US with her first child Josef on 09/16/1909 as Borbala Kajuha. She and Josef had five children: Josef born in Hungary in 1907, Ferenc (Frank) born in the US in 1910, Sandor (Alex) born in 1913?, Charles (my father) born in 1916, and Bertha Goldie born in 1920?.

I found records of a Zsuzsa Kajuha arriving the same day, but I don't have any memories of stories about her.

I also I found records of a Andras Kajuha arriving on 06-14-1902. I don't have any memories of stories about him either.

I remember stories of Uncle Gabor being a mechanic for a bus company in Cleveland and another uncle owning a grocery store on Buckeye Avenue in Cleveland, but I'm not sure which uncle it was.

Gail: Re: ISKI
Hello Ross,

Wow! Another 2nd cousin. This is becoming more interesting every week. Are you in touch with anyone from Gabor's family? Does anyone in the family speak Hungarian? If we could find someone in Hungary from Karoly's family we might be able to round up all of us. That would be amazing.

I was in Gavavencsello in April 2005. I met Sandor and Ilona Iski and their family. Sandor is our third cousin. Our great grandfathers were brothers. His great grandparents were Ferencs Iski born 1848 and Julianna Csombok born 1859. Our great grandparents were
Andras Iski 1851-1907 and Zsuzsanna Kozma 1858-1951. When I found Andras death in the O'vencsello church records it gave me the names of our great great grandparents Andras Iski and Borbala Hegedus. Sandor told me there were others from his side who also came to America and never returned. He told me I was the first Iski face he had ever seen from America.

You must email me at home so that we can start a circle of communication with our cousins on Andrews side.

Gail: Re: ISKI
Hello Bob and Ross Kayuha,
Mary Lou and I would like to spend time this winter starting to gathering up our Iski family history. Would you two have some time to fill in all the data, stories and pictures from Borballa's side? My grandfather Frank allways refered to her as Bertha. Is that what your family called her? Mary Lou and I would like to do this for providing it to the family only. We do not intend to publish private information online. So, what do you say? Shall we exchange email and mailing addresses and get a circle of communication going? Maybe in a few years we will have been able to assemble a Hungarian family history of the descendants of Iski Andras and Hegedus Borbala from 1825.

Hi Gail, I am looking for my ancestry. I am told my grandfather's name was Janos Iski but it changed to Eskay sometime after he arrived from Hungary. Not sure if he changed it or what. Have you heard of that name Eskay? Do you think it could be the same person as your grandfather? Any info is much appreciated. My grandfather also worked in PA. Thanks, Jane

Jane, We did not have any men named Janos in our family from Gavavencsello. Do you know where in Hungary your Iski came from? When did Janos Iski come to America? I have not come across Eskay as an alternate spelling. My grandfather spelled his name Eski. Both could have come from phonetic spellings. Gail
