clthompson: Javorcsik
I am researching my family who originated in Hungary. My grandfather, Janos Javorcsik, was from Recsk. He immgrated to the United States in the early 1900's. I am seeking anyone who may be a relative. As I have never met ANY of my grandfather's people, I hope to visit Hungary in the spring of 2006 and would enjoy meeting some of my relatives at that time.

Hungary's phone site is at :
www.matav.hu/english/index.html

A tidbit about your ancestral surname. A spelling JAVORC'IK lists in Slovak Republic. www.zoznamst.sk
9 JAVORCSIK came thru Ellis Island and a Jozsef there from Recsk.
The LDS-Mormons website is listing church records of Recsk. You can order them and gather ancestral information.

clthompson: Re: Javorcsik
Thanks for information about my grandfather's name. I am interested to discover its origin. My grandfather listed his ethnicity as Magyar when he arrived at Ellis Island, but I have since heard that it could be Polish and now you have suggested a Slovakian origin.

I will visit Recsk in the winter/spring of 2006 and hope to uncover more information there, although I know but a few words of Hungarian. Perhaps the church there can give me additional insight. Thank you again.

Zlatica : Re: Javorcsik
Your welcome.
The word javor means maple in Slovak. I only pointed out that the surname JAVORC^IK shows up in Slovak Republic.
In Polish the spelling would be JAWORCSIK, if there was but only JAWORCZAK. www.herby.com.pl/herby in Polish and only distribution.
You can order the church records here in USA. Here is a website to familiarize yourself with church wording.

Jávorcsik Sándor: Re: Javorcsik
My name is Jávorcsik Sándor, it is written so in Hungary: Jávorcsik, according to the Hungarian spelling. The -jávor- and the -juhar- two of his names for the same tree race.
Our family not on Recsk, but lived on Gádoros... my grandfather it was called Jávorcsik János.

clthompson9: Re: Javorcsik
Thank you for the information. Because the name, Javorcsik, is so rare (at least I think it is), we are probably related somehow. I am certain, however, that my grandfather, Javorcsik Janos, came from Recsk because his naturalization papers show this. Perhaps your family moved from Recsk to Gadoros? Gadoros seems fairly far south, close to Szeged. I visited Szeged when I was in Hungary. I did not know that I might have had family connections close by.

Again, thank you for your reply.

Jávorcsik Sándor: Re: Javorcsik
Because of that more Jávorcsik is, than you would believe it! In Hungary in Békés and in Csongrád county, is deserved in Budapest. In Slovakia (what Hungary was once) I know that they are in Csallóköz beside Danube Jávorcsiks, with a Hungarian and Slovak mother tongue.
There are a lot in a Hungarian surname -csik: Moravcsik, Bencsik, Zácsik, Pásztorcsik, Iváncsik, Adamcsik et cetera, but unfortunately i don't know, what he means how.
Our family availed itself of my knowledge on Gádoros neighbourhood since the 18. century.
Liked Hungary? Recsk neighbourhood is beautiful. Szeged liked? I roamed it a lot there in my childhood! More big Hungarian poets lived (until a certain amount of time) on Szeged: Juhász Gyula, József Attila, Radnóti Miklós. The summer open-air theatre, which is the one before the cathedral on space, is a speciality.

Excuse me, this is web translation.

clthompson9: Re: Javorcsik
Thank you for this good information! I did not know that "Javorcsik" was such a common name in Hungary! Does not "Javor" mean "tree" in Slovakian? I thought my grandfather might have come from Slovakia, but he lists his ethncity as "Magyar" on his naturalization papers.

I loved the area around Szeged! So beautiful and green. Lovely rivers and gentle hills. I did not know many Hungarian poets came from this area. I love literature and poetry and it would have been wonderful to read some of their work.

Szeged has a beautiful square, and Cathedral which I visited when I was there. I was on my way to Pecs where I taught for 6 months at the University there. Sadly, although my mother, grandmother and grandfather were Hungarian, they did NOT teach me the language. All of my students spoke English! I loved the country, though, and spent time touring everywhere from Debrecen, to Eger, to Budapest, Szeged and many more places. It was all very beautiful. I wish I could go again!

Do not apology for using the translator! I understood your message, and it was wonderful to hear from you.

Merry Christmas!

Jávorcsik Sándor: Re: Javorcsik
According to the Hungarian explanatory concise dictionary:
jávor (provincialism, dialect,idiomatic)= juhar
juhar (or ihar)= maple
All three variations (juhar-ihar-jávor) in geographical and family names which can be found.
jávorszarvas= alces (Alces alces)
The -juhar- word with a Slav origin. The -jávor- a word means the same one in Hungarian and in Slovak. This not miracle, since we live for a long time on a place...
So, I do not say it, that frequent name the Jávorcsik, but is because of that! The www.facebook.com I hit approximately 50 on a side, it 1 my big auntie, one my cousin, one my sister, 1 though me. I do not know the others. Indeed, apart from the direct family do not know Jávorcsik!
What did you teach at the Pécs university?
A little one is a surprise!
http://www.globusz.com/ebooks/JozsefAttila/00000010.htm
http://visegrad.typotex.hu/index.php?page=work&auth_id=127&work_id=508&tran_id=937
I do not know how good the translations are, but the origin ones fantastic!
József Attila is the largest Hungarian poet possibly! The Szeged university took his name until 37 years.
"Everything, which he was till then in our poetry, melted into József Attila; everything, which there is since then, begins with him."

Merry Christmas, or as they got accustomed to it at us, peaceful Christmas!

clthompson: Re: Javorcsik
Thank you for information about "Javor." I didn't realize the many variations of the word.

I lived in Pecs for six months while I taught Gender Communication, Conflict Management and Political Communication. I was a Fulbright Scholar and the Fulbright Program supported me during my time in Hungary. (I am a professor of communication studies at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock)

Pecs is a lovely town with a beautiful square that has a Mosque converted into a church at the center. I would often walk from the dormitories where I was staying down to the city center, sit on the benches and read.

Thank you again for sharing this information with me. I appreciate your help. Merry Christmas! (peaceful Christmas)
