Zlatica : Re: Hello
Hi

There were 16 KNEISZs that passed thru Ellis Islnad to America. Might want to look over those manifests.

Hungary's phone book is listing the name Kneisz.
www.matav.hu/tudakozo

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research wether locating distant relatives or ancestors.

De ha gondolod we can continue the letter on English language, but I think the Hungarian is better for Hungarians.
Most Izsákon él és elmúlt 79 éves.

Hello, I just came across this site and am looking for ancestors on my fathers side. Before marrying to become POJSL my Grandmother was Maria Kneisz. Living in Budafok Hungary during the 1930-40s and onward. I am searching for any information. I live and was born in Australia. (so far away!) Was wondering if kneisz is German or Austrian?

alankneisz: Re: kneisz
I think the name has decedents in both countries. But my understanding is that Kneisz comes from the Austrian 'Kneiss' and was modified to be more Hungarian, thus the z on the end. Though I could be wrong. But there are Kneisz in both Austria and Hungary so it seems both have decendents.

Lukas: Meaning of Kneisz
I'm from Austria and I haven't found any meaning for "Kneisz" in Austrian or German. I think it's the other way round, so that it is Hungarian and some changed it to "Kneiss" to make it sound more German.

When I asked a girl from Budapest about the meaning of my surname she told me, that the word which sounds most similar is the Hungarian word for "carnival". Could it be or is this absolutely wrong.

I didn't find Budafok on a map. Is it the right spelling or did they change the name of the town after the war?

I've just discovered this forum :)
I really hope someone could help me.
My question is how this austrian last name is written correctly , it should be something like sthoesbetc , the o should be an oe,I'm not sure if the "k" should be a "c".
Any suggestions please?

I visited my family in Ozora in 1992 and stayed with them. The father was Jozsef Kneisz and he is running a large farm. Is that your relative as well ?
I am not so sure about Maria Nadar. Maybe we are relatives ?

Altnetter: Re: Hello
Hello All,
My gg-grandmother was called Rozália Kneisz and she was born in a village named Bakonyjákó in Veszprém county, Hungary. She got married with Mathias Altnetter and the all family left to the south of Brazil in 1891. I went to Hungary few weeks ago and was searching at the National Archives in Budapest and found plenty of Kneisz' registrations in Bakonyjákó and Magyarpolány. Most of the german-hungarians from that region left to the Americas (US, Canada, Brazil and Argentina) from 1890's until the end of WWII. I believe there are still people with this family name living in those two villages.
I hope it helps :)
Cheers,
Roger Altnetter from Paris, France.

Kerékgyártóné Kneisz Éva: Re: Hello
Sziasztok!
