Shari: Kociscak surname
My great grandfather's name was Andrew Kociscak. He was married to Anna. They came to the US from the Austria/Czech area around 1903. They lived in Illinois and then moved to Missouri. Any information on the surname Kociscak would be helpful.

You need to locate a name of a town in order to proceed with the research. Do you know what language your ancestor spoke? Is the term Czech being used as a generic term for Czechoslovakia? That country in 1993 separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.

Do post on all the boards that apply to your ancestor's surname. There is Ancestry, Genforum, www.slovensko.com
http://slovakia.eunet.sk more.
Try to locate a manifest. If your ancestor was naturalized citizen or had social security numbers than those forms would have a name of a town.
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
Locate a name of a village and you are on your way.

Surname GORIS^C^AK does show up in Saris region of SK but not in Bodruzal. The closes listing in Krajna Poland which is only 2km from Bodruzal.

Shari: Re: surname Goriscak
I'm pretty sure this is not the spelling, but thanks to everyone for posting. I never realized I would get so many responses so quickly! My dad has seen it in writing, but can not remember the exact spelling. I need to ask some other members of the family. He pronounces it phonetically as Kochischek. Any thoughts on the spelling for that? ;)
Again, thanks to everyone for the thoughts! :))

You need to locate a precise name of a village. The spelling KOCHISCHEK (americanized) sounds like KOC^IS(^)C^EK in Slovak grammar.

jwinkle: Re: Kociscak surname
My grandmother's name was Elizabeth Mary Kociscak. She was born in 1890
in Fintice, Slovakia. Sometime around the 1920's, she came to America. She
lived for awhile with friends or family somewhere in Illinois. According to
what I heard, she met my grandfather through an ad in a Slovak newspaper.
My grandfather was William (aka Vasil) Dorin, who was living in Ohio at the time. He was widowed at the time, his wife Mary (Zdinak) at died in 1926.
William Dorin and Elizabeth Kociscak were married in Ohio in 1927. William had 5 sons from his previous marriage. William and Elizabeth moved to New
Jersey, where their son Joseph was born. They later relocated to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where my mother, Josephine was born.
My mother would like to find out if there are any related Kociscaks living in America. I think it's a good possiblity that she was related to Andrew Kociscak.

that1kid: Re: Kociscak surname
I was looking up the history of the "Kociscak" surname and I came across this site. I don't know the whole story of my ancestory, but my great grandfather changed our name of "Kociscak" to "Kocisak" (I thought this might help some people), removing the "c". I was wondering if I could get any information about the history of "Kociscak". I will research more, and if I find anything interesting, I will share it with all of you.

Thanks!

shari: Re: Kociscak surname
It would be great if you could help. I will tell you as much as I kno wat this point, as briefly as possible.
Andrew Kociscak (b.Mar 20, 1882 d.Oct 27, 1951)and Anna Kociscak -maiden name Pelch (b.May 6, 1885 d.Feb 10, 1953)were my great grandparents.
The 1910 census shows both of their birthplaces as Aust/Slovak. It also shows that Andrew came in 1902 and Anna in 1904.
The 1920 census shows both of their birthplaces as Slovakia (Czechoslovakia). It also shows that Andrew came in 1902 and Anna in 1903. It shows that they were both naturlaized in 1914.
The 1930 census shows both of their birthplaces as Czech Slovak (Czechoslovakia). It also shows that Andrew came in 1902 and Anna in 1903.
I found Andrew's Death Certificate which shows his father's name as Stephen and mother's name was Anna, but unknown for the mother's maiden name. It shows his birthplace as Hungary.
I found Anna's Death Certificate which shows her father's name as Joseph Pelch, but unknown for the mother's name. It shows her birthplace as Austria.
I am fairly certain that I found the entry for Anna's arrival to the U.S. in Nov 1903. It shows her name as Anna Kocsiscsak Husczava. The country of last residence on this entry shows Hungary, the race Slovak and the city, which is hard to read, appears to show Sloba.

It is with my great great grandparents, Stephen and Anna Kociscak, that I appear to be getting lost. As well as with my other great great grandparents whom I only have the name Joseph Pelch. :(

If you can help, that would be great.

Technically our ancestors should have put down Hungary but most put down Austria.

"Shareske" correctly Sarisske/Saris region, Slovak Republic. On old 1910 Hungarian megye map http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 click on Saros to view the villages. You need to locate a precise place of birth to proceed with the research.

Forgot to check in the SK's phone book.
www.zoznamst.sk
Area code 051 and 054 would cover Saris region.

I was wrong. Should have looked in the phone book. Surname BALOC shows up in area code 054. The town of Bardejov is closer to Poland's border.
