You(r) wife needs to locate a name of a town for her ancestor in order to proceed with the research.
Was her father born in Austria-Hungary empire or Hungary?

Your wife's father probably was born in Hungary, but i don't know anybody in my fanily who had been lived in The States that time. This name is is very unusual in Hungary but it must be hungarian because of the spelling.

The SSDI website http://ssdi.rootsweb.com is listing a Louis and Mary KONYECSNI. Is one of them your wife's relative? If yes, she can order SS-5Form and there should be some information that you can use to research further.
Take a look in Ellis Island website as there are 2 KONYECSNE. They were from Nagyszelmancz which is now Velke Slemence, Slovak Republic.

The spelling Konyecsni is Magyar / Hungarian and it might be or have Slavic roots. In proper Slovak the name would be KONEC'NY. This surname exists in the Eastern region of SK where VS is but none in Velke Slemence. The closest listing would be in a Velke Kapusany and Vysoka nad Uhom.

He was a resettled Slovak, in Hungarian he was "tót". He was born in Szarvas in the 1900s around.

Did you check in LDS for the Szarvas's church records?
Have you looked in Hungary's phone book for any distant relatives? Where was STEFANI Judit born?
Have you posted on Ancestry and Genforum?

What sort of documents have you found on your KONYECSNI ancestor?
Do you have his arrival manifest? He came to America single or married?
You would order the church records from LDS and view them in Family History Center Library.

My father is Konyecsni László János, his parents are Konyecsni János and Veres Margit. Konyecsni János' (he was born in Szarvas in 1923) parents are Konyecsni János (from Kondoros) and Stefáni Judit. The older Konyecsni János' father is also Konyecsni János. We live in Hungary (in Hódmezővásárhely), not in America.

The Kondoros's church records do not tell you where Janos KONYECSNI was born or arrived to Hungary from?
