agent_smart: my last name
well, I'm not really sure how to use this place, but this is my last name. I've always wondered what it meant. All I've gathered is that in armenian cooking, it means crescent.

something interesting about me is that I think I have a little bit of hunnish blood, as I have a couple of asian-like features, like folds on the inner eye, while I otherwise look caucasian.

this is me:

You need to locate a precise place of birth for your ancestor that came to America from "old country".
Take a look in Ellis Island website. www.ellisislandrecords.org

Dear unknown Mahig girl,

I have read your message on Radix Forum on the 13th of Febr in 2006. I can help you if you would like to know what is the origin of your family and origin of your family name.

My name is Barnabas Barna (Gyor, Hungary) and my wife’s name is Rita Mahig. The brother of my father-in-law (Laszlo Mahig, Budapest, Hungary) has found out the Family Tree of Mahigs. He has done long research on this project for many years.

In the middle of 18 th century many german people arrived in Hungary from Germany, because there was a lot of depopulated village after the long liberating war against Turkey. A lot of german people settled down in Bakony Hills, forming full german villages. For example villages Papakovacsi, Beb, Ganna, Peterd etc. 2 Mahig brother arrived in Hungary, they are the ancient fathers of Mahig family in Hungary. (The original german form of the name is MACHIG but the written form has changed in Hungary (The pronunciation has not!)

In the begining of the 20 th century a lot of german people went to USA from Hungary. Some Mahig went also to there. They was the ancient father of the american part of Mahig family. One of them Richard Mahig has made a Mahig Family web site (www.mahig.com) Here you can find the family tree of american Mahigs and photos about their life of today.

agent_smart: Re: my last name
Thank you so much, Barnabas. The internet can be such a useful thing. I have been very curious about the original meaning of my last name, and now that I know that it has German origins and you have told me the original spelling, maybe I'll be able to figure it out.

As a matter of fact, Richard Mahig is my first uncle! I had seen the family tree he made on mahig.com, but I wanted to know how the Mahigs came to Hungary.

Again, thank you for the help, and please send regards to your wife, Rita, and Laszlo Mahig, as well. It's so nice to become aware of a distant relative.

agent_smart: Re: my last name
One more question: In Germany and Hungary, are both forms of the name common or rare?

Rambo: Re: my last name
Újságcikk 2007-ből:

Magyarországon ma 37 Máhig családnevű ember él. Ők és hozzátartozóik először szerveztek találkozót a településen, ahonnan mindany- nyian származnak. A nap a kultúrházban indult, ahol Hauber János polgármester és a 75 éves Máhig László szervező köszöntötték a mintegy száz résztvevőt. Hauber beszédében szólt a falu történetéről: Bébet a 13. század közepén említik először a dokumentumok. A köz-séget 1526 után kézről kézre adták a gazdák. Mária Terézia idején, 1741-ben német telepesek érkeztek Bébre. Nem ez volt azonban az egyetlen telepítés. Szlávok is jöttek Észak-Morvából. Az első Máhig a feljegyzések szerint 1711-ben született. Az ünnepséget a templomban tartották, majd kisétáltak a temetőbe. A templomi programban szavaltak, énekeltek fiatalok és idősebbek egyaránt. S aztán sorolták a 250 éves múltra visszatekintő családfa érdekességeit. Mint megtudtuk, a család legidősebb tagja a 93 éves Máhig Vilma néni. A legidősebb férfi a 82 éves Máhig János, a legfiatalabb pedig a kilencéves Magyar Anita. A legnépesebb Máhig családban, az 1800-as évek elején tizenhárom gyermek született. Érdekesség, hogy két Máhig házassága mindössze egyszer fordult elő, Vilma nénit Kustricz Máhig János vette feleségül. Előfordult, hogy egy férfi- nak mindhárom felesége Máhig volt. A templomban bemutatták a Máhig-kelyhet is, melyet a család letelepedésének 240.

Hi, Blanka! I've been meaning to get back to you on Facebook, but I've been so busy this last week! What did the last person on this forum say? I don't know Hungarian, at all.
